Malkajgiri is a suburban locality in the city of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, in India. It comes under Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation. It is also one of the most populated mandals in Ranga Reddy district. This locality represented both in AP Assemby and Indian Parliament. It is one of the three Parliamentary constituencies of the city of Hyderabad, the other two are Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Malkajgiri had a population of 175,000. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Malkajgiri has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 65%. In Malkajgiri, 7% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Commercial area

One of the oldest factories in the area is Shaw Wallace Distilleries Limited, which in 2007 merged with the United Spirits, a part of UB group. Anutex, CMR Shopping Mall,Sree Rama Textiles,Sri Venkateshwara Enterprises,Men.com, Kids.com are some of the leading shopping arcades located here.

Malkajgiri Assembly Constituency

The Malkajgiri Assembly Constituency is a new constituency formed after delimitation of constituencies. The General elections held in 2009 were the first elections to be held in this constituency. Akula Rajender was elected as MLA in 2009 elections held.

Culture

Malkajgiri also has quite a few wonderful temples that one can visit, namely, Durga matha temple near prashanth nagar comunity hall, Shirdi Sai Baba temple near railway station,Lord venkateswara temple along with goddesses Sridevi & Bhoodevi at Sattireddy colony. Vijaya Vinayaka temple in Vani Nagar, the Lord Rama temple in Prem Vijay Nagar Colony, the Raghavendra Swamy mutt in Venkateshwara Nagar, Hanuman and santhoshimata temple at Old Malkajgiri, Mallanna temple in Mallikarjuna Nagar and the Ganapathi and Panchamukha Anjaneya temples in Vasanthapuri Colony.

Malkajgiri also witnesses a grand scale celebration of festivals like Mahankali Jatara (Bonalu), Ganesha Chaturthi and Dussehra wherein the whole area is decorated with colourful pandals during the festival days.Special cultural festivals are arranged and movies screened during Ganesh Chaturthi near the famous Sangam in Mirjalguda.

Martin Lutheran near Neredmet X roads and Divine Grace Lutheran Church near ECIL X roads. At Christmas time, carols singing and skits are played and be celebrated with great joy.

The youth of Malkajgiri are heavily inclined to sports. Malkajgiri has produced some of the finest cricketers in town who hone their skills by training hard in the nearby British Grounds in Lallaguda.

Transport

Malkajgiri is well-connected with other parts of the city by road as well as rail. Malkajgiri Railway Station will be converted into a major junction[2] thereby connecting it to most of places by rail route.

The principal intra-city bus routes through this area are 16P (Secunderabad - Prasanthinagar),16A (Secunderabad - ECIL X Roads), 16C (Secunderabad - ECIL X Roads), 16A/K (Secunderabad - ECIL X Roads), 16H (Secunderabad - ECIL X Roads), 16H/10H (ECIL X Roads to Kondapur).

Proximity to transport

Malkajgiri is less than 15 to 20 mins drive from Secunderabad Railway Station. It is also just 3 km away from Mettuguda junction where the road leading to Uppal and the International Airport is being expanded into eight lanes.

Safilguda is one of the bustling residential areas in Malkajgiri. The most prominent landmark being "The Mini Tank Bund". The beautiful water storage tank with a well built boundary is a major attraction. It also has a famous temple "Kata Maisamma", attracting thousands of piligrims. Other places of interest include Safilguda Railway Station, Sri Venkateshwara Swamy temple (Balram nagar), Shiva Temple (Seetaramnagar) and Sai Baba Temple (Sainathpuram). The other side of Mini Tank Band houses the famous residential skyscrapers known as Krupa Complex which started the trend of high rise living in Hyderabad with buildings as tall as 3 floors. The area is adjacent to the Army Ordnance Center (AOC) with open land, making it a perfect location for giving respite from the bustling concrete jungle of the east. There is considerable population of Christian faith with several churches.

Anandbagh is a suburb of Hyderabad located adjacent to Malkajgiri. It is a predominantly residential area with many commercial establishments coming up. Anandbagh is located in the North-Eastern part of Hyderabad and is a thickly populated area.

The area is well connected to other parts of the city with a number of city buses plying in this route. (APSRTC bus routes from Secunderabad Bus Station :16P, 16A, 16C, 16A/K, 16E, 16H, 38A, 38X, 38EX, 10S etc. to name a few.) A couple of landmarks in and around Anandbagh are the Lord Venkateshwara temple(at Anandbagh X-Roads) and the Safilguda lake - popularly called as Mini Tankbund beyond which is the Krupa complex.

Mallikarjuna Nagar is a thickly populated residential area in the vicinity of Safilguda after the famous temple of the Lord "Mallikarjuna Swamy". The 2.5 KM Stretch from Safilguda through Jyothi Nagar is named after the Late Pilot Sri. Raj Kumar. Most famous temple "Mallikarjuna Swamy" is situated in the center of this landscape and attracts many devotees from far flung areas. Moreover every festival is celebrated with vibrant flowering and devotees feel pleased to come to this place. The place is well connected with the Bus Routes of APSRTC viz, 38E, 38EX, 38H, 38X.

'Alwal is a major residential suburb of Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad city. It has a population of 106,424 (2001 census) and forms part of the Greater Hyderabad agglomeration. A part of the British cantonment, Alwal got its name after alvars who were Tamil poets, the proponets of bhakti and devotees of lord Venkateshwara. Alwal is home to a historic Venkateshwara Temple, which is located near Alwal Municipal office. There are a number of other temples in the vicinity, at the nearby cantonment (Lalbazar) including one built in the style of the Lotus Temple, Delhi. This area is booming as residents of central Hyderabad are moving to Alwal to escape traffic congestion and pollution. The nearby cantonment (military) area offers good lung space for walkers.Alwal is also home to some of the famous schools in Secunderabad like the St.Ann's High School, Bolarum which was set up in 1876[1] by a group of nuns from Italy. The other schools in the area are Bethany Acedamy,Pallavi High School,Brilliant Grammar High School,Valerian Grammar School (Bollarum), Loyola Public High School (Principal: B.Annamma, Estd:-1985,Famous School in Alwal Area), Model Mission High School, Kendriya Vidyalaya Bolarum,[2] The Raja Praja High School and Triveni Talent School. Colleges in Alwal include Loyola Academy., L.R.M.G. Jatara: Alwal hosts a Carnival (Jatara) at Shri Venkateshwara Temple in every December, which attracts many people from the nearby areas. Several shopkeepers, vendors and entertainers flock a complete 1 km stretch of the road selling a variety of items which include home decors, bangles, kids' toys, etc. A variety of mobile fast-food carts are available to satisfy the taste buds of the visitors.
