Makhdoom clan

Makhdoom is a clan found mainly in Punjab, Pakistan. Many members of the clan are involved in the field of agriculture.

This clan derives its name from the 13th century da'ee Makhdoom Burhanuddin and its members use it as their surname. People who use makhdoom as a title are not of this clan.

History

The Makhdoom clan derives its biological name from Makhdoom Burhanuddin who was born around the 13th century. Several family trees, including some descendents who do not call themselves Makhdoom, indicate that Makhdoom Burhanuddin is of Iraqi descent. One source^[1] indicates that he was a descendent of Qutb Shah through his son Muhammad Shah (aka Khokar). Another conflicting (and isolated) report indicates he was of the purely Punjabi Jat Clan. It is however, extremely difficult to verify any of these sources. Even if these family trees are mutawattir, it is still quite possible that some fabrication has been introduced and should be taken with a grain of salt. Descent from Makhdoom Burhanuddin onwards however, is unattested.

In the 12th century Hazrat Makhdoom Burhanuddin and his friend Hazrat Syed Shabal were instructed by Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar to go to Sahiwal in the district of Sargodha, to preach Islam. The saints went there and they started to preach to the people. Because of these saints, many in the area converted to Islam. Both saints are great Alam of Islam. They established a Darsgah at Sahiwal District Sargodha for giving Islamic education to the students and preaching of Islam. After a many years the both Saints left this place and went to Village which is now has been known as Langar Makhdoom on the name of Hazrat Langar Makhdoom (Al Maroof Makhdoom Burhanuddin) Both saints began preaching Islam there, and again, many peoples of that area converted to Islam. After their arrival at Langar Makhdoom entire area appears to have been blessed by Allah’s mercy and blessings. Floods and disease used to cause havoc in these areas in routine; however, after the arrival of Hazrat Langar Makhdoom, Allah removed the difficulties faced by local People. Hazrat Langar Makhdoom died in Langar Makhdoom in 1245 CE (666 Hijri). He was buried in his mud dwelling hut according to his last will in Makhdoom Grave Yard near Village Changranwali Tehsile Lalian District Chiniot. Father and Mother of Hazrat Langar Makhdoom are also buried in Makhdoom graveyard. Many other Karamat are also belong to Hazrat Makhdoom Burhanuddin e.g. walking of Shesham trees from one place to an other place on the order of Hazrat Makhdoom Burhanuddin, Visit of Lion to his grave in each month.By the blessing of Allah and by the Duwa of Hazrat Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar (RA) there is one wali Allah in each family of Hazrat Makhdoom Burhanuddin (RA). Location and distribution

In Pakistan, they are found principally in Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Sargodha Village Langar Makhdoom Tehsile Lalian District Chiniot, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, Bahawalnagar, Lahore, and Toba Tek singh, Jhang, Muzzafargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan and Kohat, Malakwal, Kot Momin, Bhalwal,Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad,jalal pur bhattian,gujar k District hafizabad, Sooianwala District hafizabad,Gujranwala, Jehlum, as well as many smaller villages, Lasoori Kalan and Lasoori Khurd,Chak #14,Chak #33,Gharery,Mianwal(Mandi Bahauddin) and Mirpur AJK.

Profession

The majority are associated with the profession of agriculture, however many are also involved in politics and civil service, as well as a few working abroad mainly in the United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.
