Mahal is a Jat gotra or clan found in the Northern Indian state of Punjab.

Origin

The place of origin of the Mahils is supposed to have been Lahore. Due to not agreeing with the Mughal view on non-Muslims, they fell out with them and moved to the East Punjab, where they settled in several villages.

The "Mahals are the stout-hearted inhabitants of the Maha belt dominated by Sikhs, whose forefathers had borne the brunt of every foreign invasion from the north-west, losing courage against the indiscriminate killings."[citation needed] The Mahal's were famous for their strong build and their hard-working attitude because they worked in the army or very far away from their homes in farms or ranches.

Mahil villages

There are several villages in Punjab and Himachal that have the name "Mahil" or " Gago Mahal".Mahilan Baltohian in Hoshiarpur District and Mahil Gaila in the Nawanshahr district in the Doaba region of the state is one such village.Rana Irshad mahal In gojra.
