Mahesh Kothare is an actor, film director and producer of Marathi and Hindi films. He has worked in Indian cinema from a very young age, acting in well-known movies such as Raja Aur Rank, Chhota Bhai, Mere Laal, and Ghar Ghar ki Kahani. The very popular song "Tu kitani aachhi hai tu kitani bholi hai o maa" was also pictured on Kothare.

Mahesh Kothare is also known as a revolutionary Film maker in the Marathi Film Industry. After the onset of his directorial career with Dhumdhadaka (1985) which was a path breaking film he never looked back and has delivered many box office hits over the period of 20 years. Mahesh Kothare films are known for their technical nuances and fantasy concepts. Mahesh Kothare is one of the few Indian Film Makers who have been able to woo the audiences with the fantasy genre.

Mahesh Kothare made the first Marathi Film in true 3D which released on 7 June 2013. The film is Zapatlela 2 which is a sequel to his 1993 box office block buster 'Zapatlela'. In this film the character of a doll named, 'Tatya Vinchu', that comes to life, had become a hit and still sends a chill down the spine of the audiences. Mahesh Kothare revived Tatya Vinchu and this time in 3D. He added Animatronics and state of the art Computer Graphics in the current sequel. This horror comedy titled, Zapatlela 2 (3D) was an instant hit with the audiences and was a super hit at the box office.

Career

Later he preferred to move to Marathi cinema, where he became frontline stars and directors, though he dabbled in making a few Hindi films too. Mahesh has started his own production house 'Kothare and Kothare Vision'.

Revolution in Marathi Film Industry

In the mid-1980s, two young actors, Mahesh Kothare and Sachin Pilgaonkar, helped to revolutionize the Marathi film industry through visionary directing. Pilgaonkar directed Navri Mile Navryala, and Mahesh Kothare directed Dhumdhadaka. Both Pilgaonkar's film and Kothare's films became hits at the box office, but "Dhumdhadaka" became a trendsetter which brought young audiences to recognize the Marathi style of movie-making. Mahesh Kothare then went on to make comedies which similarly became major hits. He also made the first Marathi film shot in the anamorphic format (Cinemascope), which was Dhadakebaaz. He brought a number of innovations through the technical quality of Marathi films and was also the first to bring Dolby Digital sound to Marathi cinema with the film Chimni Pakhara. He made Pachadlela in 2004, which was the first Marathi film with computer-generated effects. Mahesh is also the first Marathi filmmaker to produce science-fiction films.

In 2013, Mahesh Kothare made the film Zapatlela 2 in 3D with his son Adinath Kothare in the lead. This film is the Sequel to his 1993 box office epic hit film Zapatlela. In this film the character of a doll named Tatya Vinchu that comes to life had become a cult amongst the marathi audiences. Mahesh Kothare revived Tatya Vinchu with 3D, Animatronics and state of the art Computer Graphics in the current sequel. This film titled Zapatlela 2 is the first marathi film to have been shot on 3D with the latest Split Beam Technology with highly professional Stereographer Enrique Criado from Spain.[1][2] The Shoot of this 3D film was completed at ND studios in Karjat. Zapatlela 2 (3D) released on 7 June 2013 and went on to become a very big Hit. It ran for 100 days and was another feather in Mahesh Kothare's illustrious cap.

Personal life

Mahesh Kothare has a son Adinath Kothare who has played a leading role in Zapatlela 2. Adinath married to famous Marathi actress Urmila Kanitkar.
