Magnus Erharuyi Okuonghae (born 16 February 1986) is a Nigerian footballer who plays as a defender for Colchester United. He has represented England at semi-professional level.[4]

Club career

Early career

Born in Nigeria,[3] Okuonghae spent time with Fulham youth team before joining the Rushden & Diamonds academy playing primarily as a midfielder before moving into defence, also including a spell as reserve captain. He made his Football League debut on 9 August 2005 at Field Mill in a 1–0 win over Mansfield Town and went on to play 23 times for the Northants Club, scoring once. During his spell, he made eight league appearances on loan at Bishop's Stortford.[5]

Following Rushden's relegation to the Conference at the end of 2005–06 season, Okuonghae rejected the offer of a new contract and left the club. After a trial with Gillingham, he joined Aldershot in August 2006. Days after, he was called up to the England semi-professional side, he switched to St Albans City at the end of August 2006 on a non-contract basis. He added a third Conference club in the season in January 2007 when he joined Crawley Town. He had made 18 for St Albans and made 21 appearances for Crawley scoring two goals.[6][7]

Dagenham & Redbridge signed Okuonghae from Crawley on 30 May 2007. He joined Weymouth on a one month loan deal on 22 February 2008. In the summer of 2009, he refused a three-year deal offered to him by Dagenham & Redbridge.[3]

Colchester United

On 1 July 2009, Colchester United signed Okuonghae on a two-year deal.[8] On 1 December 2009, he signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract to keep him at the club until the end of the 2011–12 season having been ever-present for the League One side.[9]

Okuonghae held the captain's armband for much of his first season with Colchester. Having been a first team regular for his first season, he suffered an injury blow in February 2011, ruling him out until the end of the season.[10]

On 4 July 2012, Okuonghae left the club after his contract had expired citing a desire to move to a Championship club.[11] However, on 14 July 2012, Okuonghae made a u-turn on his decision and signed a three-year deal with the U's, having initially indicated that he was looking to leave the club to join a Championship side.[12] He finished the 2012–13 season with the highest number of appearances, making 45 starts and coming off the bench once, helping the club avoid relegation to League Two.[13]

Following a solid start to the 2013–14 season, Okuonghae was nominated for the League One 'Player of the Month' award for August, having been an ever-present member of the Colchester defence that conceded only four goals in five games.[14] He scored the opening goal in a 3–1 defeat to Brentford on 19 October, his first of the season.[15] He netted in another defeat, this time at the hands of Swindon Town at the Colchester Community Stadium on 16 November, a 2–1 loss.[16]

International career

Okuonghae made one appearance for England National Game XI, playing a friendly against Forest Green Rovers at the New Lawn stadium in September 2006 in a match to mark the official opening of the stadium.[4]
