Madhopur lies on the Pathankot - Jammu national highway, NH-1A - the only road link that Jammu and Kashmir has with the rest of the country. Madhopur is well connected with whole country by road air and train and nearest main station from Madhopur is Pathankot at a distance of 9.5 km. It was a part of the Nurpur Princely state ruled by the Pathania Rajputs prior to 1849 A.D. Now it is known as "Gateway of Punjab" a meeting point of the three northern states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Due to its ideal location, Madhopur serves as a travel hub for the three northerly states i.e. Punjab (Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal) and is a hub for the Indian Army. Madhopur is the small town in the state of Punjab in terms of population. It is the last point in Punjab on the national highway that connects Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. This bestows strategic importance on the town and due to this strategic position Madhopur is also known as Gateway of Punjab. Upper Bari Doab Canal start from here, which is best known for it’s Asia's foremost Hydraulic Research Station at the Upper Bari Doab Canal in Malikpur Sujanpur. Madhopur is situated in the picturesque foothills of Kangra and Dalhousie, with the river Ravi flowing close by, the city is often used as a rest-stop before heading into the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, Dalhousie, Chamba, and Kangra, deep into the Himalayas. Madhopur Head works which date back to the Munhall era.
