Macromantics is the stage name used by the Melbourne-based hip hop artist Romy Hoffman.
Biography
In 1995, Hoffman started performing with her high school classmate Ben Lee's pop/punk band Noise Addict as a 15 year old guitarist.[1]"I just did the last tour with them, which was great because I got to go to America, I never actually recorded with them, except for a B-side on a seven-inch.[2]She later returned to the US, this time on holiday, ending up in San Francisco.
"Again, through fate, I met the musician I'm currently working with. It wasn't premeditated. I didn't go over there thinking of making an album."
"I've had nothing but respect and support, Everyone over there is interested in what's happening here, too. When I do go over there, I take over some Aussie hip-hop and people are surprised. They find it hard to understand. My accent isn't as hardcore, but they have problems trying to decipher everything that's said. They think the beats are really good, but they can't understand all of it."[2]
The result of her San Francisco connection was the release of her debut solo EP, Hyperbolic Logic in 2004.[3]
In August 2006, she recorded a cover of Kris Kross's "Jump" for Triple J's Like a Version segment.
2006 also saw Hoffman become the first hip-hop act (and only the second Australian act) to be signed to the US record label, Kill Rock Stars (home to The Gossip, Deerhoof, Sleater Kinney and Bikini Kill).[4] She released her first full-length album, Moments in Movement, in September 2006 created in collaboration with local producer Tony Buchen. The album was nominated for the 2006 J Award.[5]
2007 saw Macromantics undertaking a national tour and supporting Lily Allen's tour of Australia.[4]
