MHC Mountfield is a professional ice hockey team in the Slovak Extraliga.
History
Club was established in 1932 as Slávia Martin. Later the name was changed to Sokol, ŠK, ZŤS, Hutník, Martimex ZŤS, Martimex and MHC Martin (2000–2010). Names Slávia, Sokol, ŠK (Športový klub - Sport Club), TJ (Telovýchovná jednota - bodybuilding unity) are common names, meaning sport organisation in Slovakia or Czechoslovakia. Names Hutnik, ZŤS and Martimex are connected to heavy engineering factory or factories cooperating with it, major employer in region (from 1930's to 1990's). Since 2010/2011 season the name is MHC Mountfield. Club played in county league, since 1970 in 1.SNHL. In 1992/1993 season hockey club advanced into Slovak Extraliga. MHC Martin played in Slovak Extraliga all seasons except 1999/2000 and 2004/2005, which spent in 1st. Slovak National Hockey League.
After years of economical stability, which is rare in this provincial team, management, head coach Dušan Gregor and his predecessor Ladislav Spišiak systematicly built up team, that won bronze medal in 2009/10 season. It consist of former youth players like Jaroslav Markovič jr., Andrej Themár, Miroslav Dzubina, experienced players Ivan Ďatelinka, David Appel, Michal Macho, Jaroslav Jabrocký and veterans Michal Beran, Peter Klepáč, Marek Uram and Karol Križan. Team clinches play-off spot by 4th place in regular season (74 points in 47 matches). In first round MHC Martin pass through HK36 Skalica with legendary Žigmund Pálffy on rooster 4:3 on wins. In second leg MHC Martin loss 4:1 on wins to future champions HC Košice.
Woman's team (MHK Martin) won woman's extraliga 10 times between 1997–2009), junior organizations make also some achievements and Hockey Club Martin deliver some players (and for years also doctor MUDr. Dalimír Jančovič, who cooperate with MHC Martin) into Slovak Men's, Woman's and Junior's Ice Hockey Representation.
