Métier, Limited is a project portfolio management (PPM) company[1] founded in 1998. Métier’s offerings include project portfolio management software and pmo services. The company has offices in Healdsburg, California and Arlington, Virginia. Métier’s markets PPM Central software and PMO Central managed services.[2] PPM Central was announced in 2011 as the successor to WorkLenz.[3]

Company

Métier was ranked as one of the fastest growing privately held companies in the U.S. by Inc. Magazine in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.[4]

PPM Central

PPM Central is web-based project portfolio management software developed, manufactured and maintained by Métier. PPM Central was released in November 2011.[5] Prior to PPM Central, Métier’s proprietary software was called WorkLenz.

PPM Central includes 20 tools and 50 standard reports.[6] The integrated toolset in PPM Central allows users to derive reports at all levels of the taxonomy.[7] PPM Central also includes the workforward center, which uses patented algorithms to provide recommendations for improving future work based on past performance.[8]

In August 2010, Sears Holdings Corporation selected Métier's solution to support the enterprise with PPM.[9]

In 2000 Lockheed Martin utilized WorkLenz in the Data Capture System project for the 2000 census. Lockheed Martin tracked and analyzed tasks to model projects with WorkLenz. “Generally, what [we used to do] is set a plan; execute to the plan; and at the end, you’d get together with lessons learned and say. ‘What were all the things that didn’t go the way we thought?’” said Clyde Relick, program manager for DCS 2000, “Then we would try to remember and try to encapsulate them into our next project plan, which of course, was only a week away. With [WorkLenz] we did that on a daily basis.” [10]

PMO Central

PMO Central is Métier’s managed services offering.[11] PMO Central is composed of consultants who are either Certified Associate in Project Management or Project Management Professional certified to support the PPM Central software and organizations' PPM initiatives.

Customers

Métier customers include: the US Federal Bureau of Investigation,[12] Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation,[13] City of Miami Beach,[14] Sears Holdings Corporation,[15] Lockheed Martin Corporation,[16] U.S. Department of Agriculture[17] and the California Technology Agency.[18]

In December 2011 the California Technology Agency was named a finalist for Project Management Office of the Year by PM Solutions PMI Project Management Office Community of Practice.[19] The California Technology Agency is also the first state government agency to achieve CMMI Level III.[20]

Industry recognition

In October 2013, PMI recognized Métier's Chief Executive Officer, Douglas Clark, with the PMI Eric Jenett Project Management Excellence Award. His recognition was announced at the PMI Global Congress in New Orleans, Louisiana.[21]

In the June 2012 publication Métier Pioneers Semantic Portfolio Management, third party analyst Enterprise Management Associates detailed how Métier is using natural language processing to improve project and project portfolio management.[22]

In April 2012 PMI announced that Sears Holdings Corporation was the recipient of the 2011 PMI Distinguished Project Award for the Business Management System (BMS) V2.0 Transformation program.
The BMS V2.0 Transformation program was established in March 2010 in coordination with the Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO) at Sears and Métier PPM Consultants. The objectives of the program were to complete a successful migration from one PPM tool to Métier’s software solution.
The Business Management System (BMS) V2.0 Transformation program was a remarkable achievement for Sears Holdings Corporation,” said Nancy Bilodeau, director of partnership programs. “We are excited to continue our association with PMI and Métier as we continue to expand our capabilities and learn from the program."[23]

In 2009 Forrester evaluated 14 project portfolio management (PPM) vendors using 89 criteria. Métier was named a leader in The Forrester Wave: Project Portfolio Management, Q4 2009 (December 2009).[24]

Margo Visitacion, Vice President of Forrester Research stated, "Métier's history has been primarily in the public sector arena; however, its taxonomy driven approach can help immature organizations across a number of industries start to build better processes and more mature organizations get to the next level. Its WorkLenz product provides collaboration to help users work together more effectively; reporting is robust and easy to access and distribute."[25]

Métier is also a Registered Education Provider with PMI.[26] The Registered Educator Program certifies organizations to issue Professional Development Units towards CAPM or PMP certification.

In 2010 Métier was named a finalist for Corporate Social Responsibility Program of the Year at the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.[27]

The Stevie Awards named Métier’s Protectors to Project Managers the Community Involvement Program of the Year in 2011.[28] The program is designed to give back to America’s Wounded Warriors by providing project management training, PMI certification, and professional development coaching preparation for new careers as certified project managers.
