Lupin III (ルパン三世 Rupan Sansei) is an upcoming Japanese film directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and based on Monkey Punch's manga series Lupin III. The film will show how the main characters met for the first time and will reportedly update the franchise to a contemporary setting.[1][2] It will premiere on August 30, 2014.[3]

The film has been in the works for four years, including two and a half years to write the script. Original creator Monkey Punch participated in the writing and suggested ideas.[4] Filming began on October 3, 2013 and will move to Thailand for two months before principal photography ends in December.[1] A friend of Ryuhei Kitamura told media that the director intends to update Lupin III to be more modern, including stripping main character Goemon of his traditional Japanese clothing and katana.[2]
