Career
College and amateur
Mulholland played his college career at Wingate University from 2007 to 2010.[1] In 2009 Mulholland was named First Team All-American and SAC Conference Player of the Year.[2]
During his college career, Mulholland also played with USL Premier Development League club Reading United during their 2009 and 2010 seasons.[3]
During Luke Mulholland's college career, he also coached the U16 club team of California based Waxhaw United SC.[4]
Professional
Mulholland signed his first professional contract in April 2011, joining third division USL Pro club Wilmington Hammerheads.[5] He made his professional debut - and scored his first professional goal - on 17 April 2011 in Wilmington's first game of the 2011 season, a 1–0 win over the Rochester Rhinos.[6] Mulholland enjoyed a standout first season and was voted USL Pro Rookie of the Year and was also named in the USL Pro Team of the Year.[7]
After the close of the 2011 USL Pro season, Mulholland signed with NSC Minnesota Stars of the second division North American Soccer League on 6 September 2011 where his form and goals helped the team to win the NASL play-offs, scoring in the final against Fort Lauderdale Strikers.[8]
An impressive 2011 earned Mulholland trials with Major League Soccer club New England Revolution and English League One club Walsall.[9]
On 24 January 2012, the Tampa Bay Rowdies announced the signing of Mulholland after his successful late season run with the NASL champion Minnesota Stars in 2011.[10] The 2012 season was another one of great success for Mulholland, being named in the NASL Team of the Year and scoring the game-winning goal v Carolina Railhawks in the NASL Play Off Semi Finals, earning the Rowdies a place in the Grand Final v Minnesota Stars. The Rowdies went on to win the NASL Final, with Mulholland scoring the first goal in a penalty shoot-out victory.
The Preston, England native was wildly successful in his two years in Tampa, scoring 17 goals and registering 13 assists in 51 league appearances, helping the team to the 2012 NASL Soccer Bowl title becoming the first player to be named to the NASL Best XI in back-to-back seasons.[11]
