Luis Fernando Muriel Fruto (born 16 April 1991) is a Colombian striker. He currently plays for Italian Serie A club Udinese.

He has been considered to be one of the most promising strikers in world football. Often receiving praise from European dominants, Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona.[1][2][3] During his first season with Udinese, Muriel won the Serie A Young Footballer of the Year along with Stephan El Shaarawy.

Muriel is currently a Colombian international having represented his nation at a full international level since 2012. Considered to be a member of the current golden generation of Colombia, Muriel is regarded as the future of the national team. He made his senior debut in June 2012, in a World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador. The following year, Muriel scored his first goal, against Guatemala.

His technique with the ball as led to many comparisons to that of Brazilian legend Ronaldo. Most noticeably hailed in Italy.[4][5][6]

Club career

Deportivo Cali

2009-10

Born in Santo Tomás, Atlantico,[7] Muriel began his career with the youth side of CD Atlético Junior.

In January 2009, he was signed by Deportivo Cali and immediately joined their youth side.[8] After spending a year with the youth side of Deportivo, he was promoted to the Liga Postobon I team. On 12 July 2009, he made his debut for his new side against Envigado FC.[9] Before leaving Deportivo Cali, Luis made a small 1 time appearance in the 2010 Copa Colombia where Cali eventually won.

Udinese

2010

On 30 June 2010,[10] Udinese Calcio signed the 19-year-old Colombian striker from Deportivo Cali after he had scored 9 goals in 10 games in the Colombian league.

Loaned to Granada

2010-11

He was loaned to Granada CF of Spain's Second Division to get European experience on 12 July 2010[11] as Udinese did not wish to spend their no-EU registration quota on Muriel. While at Granada he made seven appearances in total but did not manage his debut goal in European competition.

Loaned to Lecce

2011-12 season

When he returned to Udinese at the end of the season they decided to loan him out again for the 2011–12 season, this time to fellow Italian Serie A side U.S. Lecce. Once again Udinese did not wish to use its own quota on Muriel (and Željko Brkić), so Lecce "signed" Muriel outright from Granada and in January 2012 sold Muriel back to Udinese.

Return to Udinese

2012-13 season

On summer 2012, Muriel returned to Udinese. On 12 September 2012 Muriel signed a new 5-year contract with Udinese.[12] He made his debut in a 2–1 defeat against Fiorentina, providing the assist for the opening goal.[13] Muriel was awarded Serie A Young Footballer of the Year for 2012, which he shared with Stephan El Shaarawy.[14]

During his return to Udinese, Muriel improved his goal tally record in Italy. He managed to score against teams such as Inter Milan and AS Roma while becoming more consistent with goals within the Serie A league. In the last match of the season, Muriel finished with a goal and assist in a 5–2 crushing over Inter Milan. In total, Muriel finished the season with 11 goals and 3 assists in just 22 matches with just 15 starts. A new personal record for Muriel in Serie A. Luis Muriel then stated that he wanted to remain with Udinese for a few more seasons in order to continue improving his talents.[15]

2013-14 season

In the qualifying playoff rounds of the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League, Muriel scored 2 goals in a 3-1 victory over Široki Brijeg. It's also noted that he was wearing the number 9 jersey by this point for the club.[16]

In his first league match of the season, Muriel scored against Coppa Italia champions, Lazio in a 2-1 loss. On 1 September, he converted a goal from the penalty spot in a 3-1 win over Parma.[17] Muriel saved Udinese from a 1-0 lost against Bologna by providing a wonderful assist.[18]

Days later, Muriel signed a 5-year extension on his contract, keeping him with the club until 2018.[19]

Muriel scored a winning goal against U.S. Sassuolo Calcio in a 2-1 victory.[20]

In late November, Muriel suffered an injury and is expected to rest for the remainder of 2013.[21]

Muriel came back from injury to score a goal in a 2-1 victory over AC Milan.

International career

Muriel played for the Colombian U-20 national team.[22] He was part of the team that won the 2011 Toulon Tournament where he scored a goal against Côte d'Ivoire in a 4–1 victory.

He scored twice in Colombia's opening match of the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup against France in a 4–1 victory. In the final match of the group stage, he scored a goal against South Korea in a 1–0 victory. In the match against Costa Rica, he scored the opening goal in an eventual 3–2 victory.

Muriel scored a header against Guatemala in a 4–1 victory.

Style of play

Muriel's acceleration, speed, dribbling, ball control, aim for goal and passing accuracy are his key attributes.[23][24][25][26]

He has been praised often during his time in Italy, which led him to win the award for best young player in the Serie A league in 2012. Many figures in Italy such as fellow Udinese teammate Antonio Di Natale, praised Muriel for his potential.[27]

Muriel has been compared to Brazilian legend Ronaldo based on his talents. Muriel stated that his comparison to Brazilian legend Ronaldo by his playing style, is likely because he was a main supporter of Ronaldo during his time in Inter Milan. Muriel went on to say that he supported Inter Milan because Ronaldo was playing for them at the time. Coincidentally, Muriel also stated that he also suffers weight issues (like Ronaldo during his time) and had to lose five kilos at point. This meant that he had to be consistent with fitness, which explained his similar style to the Brazilian legend and high quality in terms of athletic stature.[28]
