Lorenzo H. Zambrano Treviño (born March 27, 1944) is the Chairman and CEO of CEMEX, one of the largest global building-materials companies in the world. CEMEX's stock is traded on the Mexican Stock Exchange (CEMEX CPO) and listed on the New York Stock Exchange (CX).

Early life and education

Zambrano was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico to Lorenzo Zambrano Hellion and Alejandrina Treviño Madero. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) in 1966 and an MBA from Stanford Business School in 1968.

Career

In 1968 he joined CEMEX, a cement company founded in 1906. For 17 years he held various executive positions, including Plant Manager of Torreón and Monterrey, and Director of Operations.

On May 30, 1985 he was named CEO. Since 1995 Mr. Zambrano has also served as Chairman of the Board. In his role as CEO, he designed and implemented the strategy that allowed CEMEX to grow from a local operation in northern México to one of the leading global building-materials company. Through more that 16 mergers and acquisitions, CEMEX conquered local, regional and global markets.

On September 15, 1999, Mr. Zambrano led a ceremony in the NYSE to begin the listing of the CEMEX stock (CX).

He is a member of the Board of Directors of IBM, and has also served in the International Advisory Board of Citigroup International, the Advisory Council of Allianz Companies and the Boards of Directors of Alfa, Grupo Financiero Banamex, FEMSA, Empresas ICA, Televisa and Vitro. From 1997 to 2012, he served as Chairman of the Board of Monterrey Tech,—Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey—, Mexico’s and Latin America’s leading private University. Additionally, he also serves on the Board of the Monterrey Museum of Contemporary Art, MARCO.

On 28 November 2011 he announced via Twitter that he would not seek re-election as chairman of the board of the Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM) citing personal reasons.[2]

Awards

In recognition of his business and philanthropic record, Mr. Zambrano has earned a number of prestigious honors such as the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship in 2005,[3] the Americas Society's Gold Medal for Distinguished Service, the Excellence in Leadership Award from the Stanford Graduate Business School, and the Ernest C. Arbuckle Award for Managerial Excellence from the Stanford Business School's Alumni Association.
