London Buses route 229 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. The service is currently contracted to Go-Ahead London.

History

The 229 began operation on 21 February 1951 as a very short route running between Sidcup Garage and Sidcup Wren Road. On 17 October 1951 the route was extended at both ends to the north at Bexleyheath and to the south at Orpington Station. On 4 March 1959 the route was extended once again to the north to Woolwich, replacing the withdrawn trolleybus route 698.

The route was once again altered on 21 May 1977, being withdrawn between Woolwich and Bexleyheath (apart from peak journeys to Erith) but extended the other end from Orpington Station to Farnborough replacing the withdrawn section of route 51.

Another change took place on 4 September 1982 when the 229 was withdrawn between Farnborough and Green Street Green, being replaced by route 261.

16 August 1986 saw the withdrawal of sections between Green Street Green and Sidcup Garage, and between Bexleyheath Garage and Bexleyheath Market Place. The route was put out to tender and won by Bexleybus, using Daimler Fleetlines (DMS). In 1988 the route was revised to terminate at Foots Cray on the closure of Sidcup Garage on 16 January 1988. The route was also transferred to Bexleyheath Garage.

On 19 January 1991, the route was diverted to serve Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, and on 8 October 1994 it was extended from Erith to Thamemead. The route was converted to low floor in 2000.

On 22 January 2011, London Central retained route 229 and brand new Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TL double deckers were introduced.

On 5 November 2011, new Alexander Dennis Enviro400 double deckers were introduced.
