Llanrug (or Llanfihangel-yn-y-grug) is a large village in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. It lies about 4 miles to the east of Caernarfon, 7 miles south of Bangor and 3 miles northwest of Llanberis. It is the largest populated village in the Arfon area of Gwynedd, Wales. The old name term of the village was initially Llanfihangel-y-Rug, derived from Eglwys Sant Mihangel situated about half a mile west of the village. It has a Welsh-speaking community of 81% and a population of 2,500. The busy A4086 road from Llanberis Pass to Caernarfon runs through the village.

Attractions

The village offers extensive views of Snowdonia including The Carneddau, Carnedd y Filiast, Elidir Fawr, Glyder Fawr and the northwestern side of Snowdon Massif. The River Seiont runs alongside the village and is a popular angling river. There is a fish hatchery in the Crawiau area of the village run by the Seiont, Gwyrfai and Llyfni fishing association.

Facilities

There is a primary school with about 300 pupils, and a secondary school called Ysgol Brynrefail with 740 pupils. There are a couple of pubs and hotels, and a holiday park to the south of the village. Llanrug also offers a post office, a couple of convenience stores, a chip shop and a barber shop. Bus services to Llanrug are provided by the Padarn Bus company, the company is based in a depot outside the nearby village of Llanberis.

The church of St Michael is a Grade II* listed building.^[1]Bryn Bras Castle is a Grade II* listed country house located on the old road between Llanrug and Llanberis.

Sport

Llanrug has a football club, Llanrug United F.C. that was formed back in 1922. Llanrug United have played their home games in Cae Eithin Duon since the early 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s some scenes were filmed in Llanrug for locally-televised Welsh-speaking comedy football programme C'mon Midffild. (come on midfielder).

There is also a youth football team, nicknamed Llewod Llanrug (Llanrug Lions).

Climate

Like the surrounding area of Snowdonia, Llanrug has a temperate climate, generally wetter and colder than many areas of North West Wales, including Lleyn Peninsula and Anglesey. The annual mean temperature of Llanrug is around 9°C (48°F), due to the modifying effects of the Irish Sea restricting the temperature range less than other parts of the village. The village's snowiest and coldest month of the year is January, with the mean temperature between 0°C (32°F) and 4°C (40°F). Snow and ground frost can occur from late November into early April. Due to the close proximity of Snowdonia, the village normally expects sleet or heavy snowfall to fall at an average of 15 days every winter. During the summer, June and July are typically the warmest months with average temperatures ranging from 17°C (68°F) to 20°C (72°F).
