This is a list of media based on work by Stephen King (including the Richard Bachman titles). Note that aside from Creepshow 2, the sequels are only tangentially related to Stephen King's work.

Distribution rights

A number of the above filmed works have distribution rights (TV, video, sometimes theatrical) owned either by CBS Studios/Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate, and/or Warner Bros. Entertainment.

For example, Lionsgate owns US distribution rights to Rose Red, Storm of the Century, and Desperation; while WB has international rights. CBS owns The Stand and the other adaptations produced by Laurel Entertainment.

Stage

  • 1988: Carrie is notorious for its history as a flop on Broadway, and has gained a cult following in recent years. The musical was revived at the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York, directed by Stafford Arima from January until April 2012. On September 25, 2012, the first official cast recording was released. The new production is currently available to license for amateur productions from Rodgers & Hammerstein Theatricals.
  • 1990: Ghost Stories was an adaptation of Stephen King's short stories The Return of Timmy Baterman about zombies; Strawberry Spring about a campus serial killer; Gray Matter, a black comedy about a hideous mutation caused by a bottle of beer; Uncle Otto's Truck, The Boogeyman, about a distraught father's chilling tale of a child-killing, closet monster as well as selections from Pet Sematary. Premiered by the Arts Center Theatre at Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey. Directed and Adapted by Robert Pridham. The play toured throughout the United States in the mid-90's.
  • 1993: Rage Stage play produced by Shane Black and Directed by Jim Birge. Originally Titled Getting It On and planned to be performed in Jasper, IN, but due to scheduling issues and venue problems it was performed at the VFW in Santa Clause, IN. The show was performed from April 23 through May 1. The final show was originally slated for May 2 but had to be cancelled due to conflicts with venue planning.
  • 2005: Misery Stage play by Simon Moore based on 1987 novel. A musical version also exists by Jeff Hockhauser and Bob Johnson. While the musical version has not been staged, a demo recording has circulated the internet in recent years.
  • 2010: The Shawshank Redemption was dramatized by Dave Johns and Owen O'Neill, directed by Peter Sheridan which had its world premiere at the Peter Sheridan Theatre in London in September 2010. A recent production has been mounted at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe directed by Lucy Pitman-Wallace and was written by Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns in August 2013.

There have also been dramatizations of many of Stephen Kings short stories, including Nona, Quitters, Inc., In the Deathroom, Strawberry Spring, Harvey's Dream, The Man Who Loved Flowers, Mute, The Ten O'Clock People and King's poem, Paranoid: A Chant. There have also been alleged stage production of Stand By Me and Rage as well as a several parody stage versions of The Shining.

Music

  • 1983 "The Stand", was recorded by The Alarm, and was released in the UK as a single. The song's lyrics were inspired by Stephen King's novel, The Stand.
  • 1984 "Horror-Teria: (The Beginning)" from the Twisted Sister album "Stay Hungry". The albums liner notes thank Steven King for inspiring the piece.
