Lijo Jose Pellissery is an Indian filmmaker who works in Malayalam cinema. He has directed three acclaimed films, Nayakan, City of God and Amen

Biography

Lijo was born in Chalakudy in Thrissur district as the son of actor Jose Pellissery.[1] After completing the schooling from Carmel High School, he obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration from IIPM, Bangalore.

Coming from a family with film background, Lijo started his career by making short films. He was one of the finalists of the PIX Short Film Festival 2007. He considers K. G. George, Padmarajan and Akira Kurosawa as his idols.[2] [3] He directed his first feature Nayakan in 2010. It revolved around a Kathakali artist who joins the underworld to take revenge on those who killed his family and destroyed his life. The film was praised by critics but failed at the box office.[4][5][6][7] His next venture, City of God, used hyperlink cinema as its narrative structure, and was another critical and artistic success.[8] However, the box office fate of this film was even worse, as it was pulled from theatres just days after its release. City of God was one of the first films in the category of "New Generation" Malayalam cinema, although the trend was just being recognised during the same year. Had it been released a little later, moviegoers and analysts feel the film would have received more critical and box office success.[9]

His third movie titled Amen, was a pathbreaking one in terms of its narrative style and the treatment with which it was made. With actors like Indrajith Sukumaran, Fahad Fasil, Swathy Reddy and Kalabhavan Mani delivering exemplary performances in the film, it was not only Lijo's first commercial success and it brought out rave reviews and also some criticisms. Filled with Symbolisms and underlying Magical Realisms it became one of the most successful movies to be released in 2013. Filled with slapstic comedies and folk influences, and food for thought for critics Amen made collection boxes to jingle.Lijo has been accused of copying scenes and even shots from foreign language films, for all three films he directed.

His fourth project is titled Antichrist. The film is a horror thriller written by National Film Award winning writer P. F. Mathews featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Fahadh Faasil and Indrajith Sukumaran.[10]
