Liam Messam (born 25 March 1984) is a rugby union player who plays for Waikato in the ITM Cup and for the Chiefs in Super Rugby, where he is the current Captain. He has also played for the New Zealand Maori in the 2006 Churchill Cup as well as captaining them in the 2010 centenary series and was in the New Zealand sevens team that won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2010 Commonwealth Games.[1] His position is loose forward. He was selected as a part of New Zealand sevens coach, Gordon Tietjens' best New Zealand sevens team of all time. After the retirement of then Chiefs captain Mils Muliaina, Messam was named the new co-captain from 2011 and onwards.
In 2012 and 2013 Messam was awarded the Tom French Cup as Māori Player of the Year.[2][3]
All Black Career
On 26 October 2008, Messam was selected in the All Black end of year tour squad to tour Hong Kong and Europe.[citation needed] He played one test against Scotland and one match against Munster. On 31 May, he was selected for the 26-man squad to play France and Italy in the three-test Iveco series, also known as the June tests. He played in the 2011 Tri-Nations but was dropped a month out of the Rugby World Cup 2011 in favour of Victor Vito.
