Les Gara is a Democratic member of the Alaska House of Representatives, representing the 23rd District since 2003.

Gara is a former Assistant Attorney General and part owner of a local restaurant, Snow City Cafe. Although in the House Minority, he has been successful with various progressive social legislative initiatives, especially reforming Alaska's foster care system. He is frequently quoted or interviewed as the 'voice of the opposition' to the House Majority. He has also worked with fellow Democratic house members and state senators, joining with moderate Alaska Republicans, during the Palin Administration to change oil taxes to make Alaska receive what he considers a fair share of the revenue from the oil that, in Alaska, is owned in common by the public. Gara has also worked hard to raise Alaska from its near bottom position of providing voluntary pre-k education.
