Lempo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lempo is a sort of fiend from Finnish folklore and mythology. Lempo is the known as 'Lord of the Demons' or 'the God of Evil' in Finnish mythology. Lempo creates misfortune, disease, and unspeakable nastiness.

This Finnish God is known for his control over all the demons and evil spirits of the forest, which are known as the 'Piru'. Suprisingly, the Finnish Lord of Demons is also the God of Love in Finland's mythology.

Ancient Finnish people, just like many would today, believed love was an insufferable ailment, that have led to the brink of insanity. Even if this does seem like a strange paradox, it is thought to be the highlight of how ancient Finnish people viewed love.

Lempo is usually portrayed as an evil character in Finnish folklore, as love can be capricious, even dangerous, it could even take control of a being and them to destruction.

The words "lempo" and "hiisi" are also used as very mild swear words in the Finnish language. "Piru" is a slightly stronger swear word.
