Leipziger Internet Zeitung (also: l-iz or Lizzy) is the leading daily online newspaper in the greater Leipzig region of Germany. Its highly professional editors and contributors aim at documenting local news by placing it in a national and international perspective.[1] The newspaper reports on events in various areas, such as politics, economics, culture, education, and sports. In addition, it has built up a large archive on local news in the past years (30.000 articles, 2011). This includes standard news reporting, but also commentary and photo journalism.[2] Considering the labour intensive task of regional news coverage, this archive is an important monument of local cultural memory.

The newspaper is independent and viewed as an important alternative to other main-stream and official news sources in the area and in the country. Given the history of the Eastern German area with its 40 years of communism and news censorship up to 1989, the Leipziger Internet Zeitung has a special place and significance for its readers.[3] According to online sources, the newspaper attracts approx. 240.000 visitors per month, many of them recurrent readers.[4][5]
