Laurel Lisa Holloman[1] (born May 23, 1971) is an American painter and actress.

As an actress, Holloman is best known for her performances on stage, and in a number of independent films. Holloman's artistic career has evolved from painting for charities, to solo exhibits in several European cities, including Paris, Berlin, and Venice. She is best known for her abstracts, using intense colors and mural-sized canvases. Holloman's greatest acknowledgement in the art world, thus far, has been to exhibit one of her paintings, "Swell," in the 55th "Biennale," the prestigious international arts festival held in Venice, Italy in June 2013.

Early life

Holloman is the youngest child in her family. She has two older brothers. She attended the University of North Carolina and appeared in numerous theater productions in Chapel Hill and Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as in Chicago and London.

Career

Acting

After graduating from UNC, Holloman moved to Chicago to work with the Piven Theatre Workshop. She studied with John Lynn in Los Angeles, and was cast in David Orr's independent feature Blossom Time. She moved to New York City in early 1994 and appeared in stage productions such as Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, Carson McCullers' The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter at the Theatre for the New City. Holloman also performed off-Broadway in Julia Jordan's Night Swim at Playwright's Horizons.

In 1995, Holloman began her film career with her breakout role as Randy Dean in The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love for which she received critical acclaim. She worked steadily in a variety of mostly independent film roles, such as The Myth of Fingerprints, Boogie Nights and Tumbleweeds.

In 2005, Holloman appeared in Showtime's The L Word as Tina Kennard. For this role, she was presented with a Golden Satellite Award in 2005 as Best Actress in a Drama series.

Painting

Holloman did a special series of paintings that was auctioned off for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Fund. She donated a painting for a preservation group in Oregon.[2] While creating "The Tribeca Series" in New York City, Holloman donated a painting for auction to "Sewing Hope", an organization which helps women in Africa to develop small businesses. Other charities include Doctors Without Borders, and Emergency.[3]

In 2012, Holloman had two solo shows: Coeur libre and Free Falling.[4][5] She received favorable reviews for Free Falling,[6] which was held at the Ateneo Veneto in Venice, Italy. In April 2013, Holloman exhibited in a solo show "All The World Inside", at Palazzo Italia, in Berlin, Germany.[7][8][9] Holloman has recently received the honour of having her painting, "Swell" picked to be part of the group show entitled "Nell' Acqua Capisco" at the prestigious Venice Biennale, which runs from 1 June 2013, through 30 November 2013.[10][11]

Personal life

Holloman married architect Paul Macherey on July 13, 2002. They have a daughter, Lola Reiko Macherey, who was born on November 4, 2004. They adopted a second daughter, Nala Belle (meaning 'beautiful gift') on March 25, 2008. In 2011, Holloman filed for divorce, which was finalized on June 18, 2012.[12]
