Laura Codruţa Kövesi

Laura Codruţa Kövesi (born Laura Codruţa Lascu on May 15, 1973) is the current Prosecutor-General of Romania (Procuror General), the head of the Public Ministry and General Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice (Parchetul General de pe lângă Înalta Curte de Casaţie şi Justiţie). She was appointed in October 2006, the first female to be appointed to this post. At the age of 33 in 2006, she is also one of the youngest Prosecutors-General that Romania has had.

Born in Sfântu Gheorghe, Kövesi played professional basketball in her youth, at the club in Mediaş and in Sibiu, and was selected for the junior players national team which finished second in the European Championship in 1989.

Before her position as Prosecutor-General, Kövesi was the head of the Department of Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism Offences (DIICOT) branch in Sibiu County, focussing on fighting organised crime and terrorism.
