Lathrop & Gage is a Kansas City, Missouri law firm that is among the 200 largest law firms in the United States based on number of attorneys.

Its website says it has 320 attorneys.[1]

According to its website that the firm dating to 1873 is the "oldest continuously operating law firm west of the Mississippi River."[2]

Two other firms also make the claim of oldest west of the Mississippi. The Rose Law Firm of Little Rock, Arkansas says it was founded November 1, 1820 (with its name partner Uriah Milton Rose joining in 1865).[3] Houston based Baker Botts which says it was founded in 1840 (with name partner Walter Browne Botts joining in 1865 and James Addison Baker joining in 1872).

History

The firm opened in 1873 by Gardiner Lathrop and William Smith.[2] In 1876 it began representing the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad and it continues to handle it in its current BNSF Railway incarnation and has handled thousands of cases for the railroad over the years.[4]

In 1996 the Lathrop firm (then known as Lathrop & Norquist) merged with the firm Gage & Tucker which had been formed in 1930 by future Kansas City mayor John B. Gage

The firm has its headquarters at 2345 Grand in Kansas City near Union Station. Other offices are in Boston, Boulder, Chicago, Denver, Jefferson City, Los Angeles, New York, Overland Park, Springfield and St. Louis.[5]
