Lanxess Arena (originally Kölnarena, German for Cologne Arena) is an indoor arena, in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The arena opened in 1998 and can accommodate 20,000 people.
It is primarily used by VfL Gummersbach (team handball), Kölner Haie (ice hockey), and as a concert venue.
The arena is spanned by a steel arch supporting the roof via steel cables. The height of the arch is 76 m (249 ft) and its weight is 480 tons.
Events
Mariah Carey performed a one-night only show during her Rainbow World Tour on February 20, 2000.
Bob Dylan may have been the first major performer to play Kolnarena, bringing his Never-Ending Tour to the building on May 11, 2000.
The Backstreet Boys performed at the arena on June 7, 1999 during Into the Millennium Tour. Then again on October 30, 2005 during Never Gone Tour.
Janet Jackson was scheduled to perform during her All for You Tour on November 19, 2001, but the show was canceled, due to the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Shania Twain performed at the Arena on March 29, 2004 during her World Tour Up Tour.
Christina Aguilera brought her Stripped World Tour to the arena on October 4, 2003.
Cher performed on May 28, 2004 during her marathon Living Proof: The Farewell Tour.
Whitney Houston performed at the arena on September 24, and September 28, 1999 during her My Love Is Your Love Tour.
Kylie Minogue performed a show at the arena during her Showgirl Tour on April 5, 2005, and again during her KylieX2008 Tour on May 27, 2008.
WWE is a regular at the arena, as they hosted events in 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2007.
The Spice Girls performed at this arena as part of their Return of the Spice Girls tour on December 20, 2007.
The arena was used for the 2007 World Men's Handball Championship, including the third place game and the final game.
On June 2, 2008, it was announced that Kölnarena would be renamed Lanxess Arena, for a period of ten years.[1] The sponsor, Lanxess AG, is a specialty chemicals group based in nearby Leverkusen.
Celine Dion performed at the arena on June 18, 2008, as part of her Taking Chances World Tour.
Nickelback played their first "warm-up show", for their Dark Horse Tour, here on September 8, 2008.
Coldplay played a concert at the arena during their Viva La Vida Tour on September 12, 2008, as well as during their Mylo Xyloto Tour on December 15, 2011.
Tina Turner performed four consecutive shows at the Lanxess Arena as part of her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour in January 2009.
Rihanna performed at the venue on June 26, and June 27, 2012 as part of her Diamonds World Tour.
On June 13, 2009, the Ultimate Fighting Championships held UFC 99 at the Lanxess Arena.[2] This was the first time the UFC has made its way to Germany.
On May 29–30, 2010, the arena hosted the EHF Champions League Final Four.
The arena was one of the venues for the 2010 IIHF World Championship, including both semi-finals, the Bronze medal game and the Championship game.
Muse played a concert at the arena during their The Resistance Tour on November 16, 2009.
Sting performed during his Symphonicities Tour on September 24, 2010, along with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Britney Spears brought her Femme Fatale Tour to the Lanxess Arena on October 18, 2011, as her only German concert. Prior to that she had performed at the arena during her Oops!... I Did It Again World Tour on November 13, 2000.
Madonna performed for the first time at the arena on July 10, 2012 as part of her MDNA Tour to a sold out crowd of 14,489 people.
Lady Gaga performed two sold out shows at the venue on September 4, and September 5, 2012 as part of her worldwide tour, Born This Way Ball.
Beyoncé is set to perform at the venue on March 15-16, 2014, with her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.
