Lancaster Medical School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lancaster Medical School is a medical school located at Lancaster, United Kingdom and is a part of the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University. It is currently both the newest and smallest medical school in the UK, with its first graduates, a cohort of 31, graduating in 2011.[1] From 2006 to 2013 it delivered the Liverpool University MBChB degree curriculum to 50 undergraduate students a year. In November 2012, the General Medical Council approved Lancaster Medical School's request to begin delivering its own medical degree independently from the University of Liverpool. Students beginning their studies after September 2013 will be registered as Lancaster University students and will therefore graduate with a Lancaster University degree.[2] The number of places for UK and EU applicants remains at 50 per year, but 4 additional places for international students are available for September 2014 onwards.[3] The current head of the medical school is Professor Anne Garden.[4][5] The five year MBChB degree is taught using a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum which the school is currently in the process of updating.[6] Clinical placements are arranged by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust.[7] They take responsibility throughout the five years of the degree for the provision of acute practice placements. As well as the time spent in hospitals (The Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness, and the Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal), students spend around a third of their clinical contact time in the community. Primary care placements are based in general practices across the Cumbria and North Lancashire region, with the North Lancashire Primary Care Trust and the Lancashire Care NHS Trust providing mental health placements.[8]
