Lamsongkram Chuwattana (Thai: ลำสงคราม ชูวัฒนะ; born December 12, 1983) is a Thai middleweight kickboxer. He is the former WBC World Middleweight Muay Thai champion which he won on February 25, 2007 over Steven Wakeling.[1] He has beaten fighters such as Farid Villaume, Bruce Macfie and Kaoklai Kaennorsing.
He has been known as Ramsongkram Suwanharnjabee before he moved to Chuwattana Gym.
Biography and career
Lamsongkram's career highlight and by far his biggest fight came in the winter of 2009, when Lamsongkram was part of a 5 man Muay Thai team that issued a challenge to the Shaolin Temple of China for a 5 weight category ring fight. The Monks of the Shaolin Temple eventually turned down the challenge citing reasons such as their religious beliefs that it was not in their nature to indulge in such types of events but a local Kung-Fu school accepted the challenge and the fights were scheduled for December 2009. Lamsongkram's 75 kg category fight was on the 19th against Zhan Kaiyin, the top Sanshou fighter in the 75 kg category of his school. Pre-fight, Lamsongkram was a huge betting favourite, as he held many advantages over his opponent, these included- a 6-foot frame to Zhan's 5-11, a 200+ professional fight experience to almost none by Zhan Kaiyin, and most importantly an 8-limb (fist, foot, elbow, knee) advantage over his Sanshou opponent's 4-limb (fist & foot) art. Lamsongkram entered the arena with extreme confidence and fought magnificently, scoring multiple points and takedowns. Although he did commit an unusually high amount of fouls, the most shocking happening 10 seconds before the end of the first round when, after a successful takedown of Zhan, he intentionally placed his right knee in a pushing manner onto Zhan's chest as he got back up. As the fight progressed, Lamsongkram fell for a classic roundhouse kick to spinning back fist combo at 1:08 of the 3rd round which lifted him of the ground for a split-second and knocked him out, and as he fell face down on the mat, Zhan then gave a kick to the head of Lamsongkram, which the referee didn't count as a foul as he proceeded to countdown Lamsongkram. In later interviews, Zhan's camp cited Lamsongkram's unacceptable fouls as the reason or "payback" for Zhan's illegal kick. And as the countdown began, the Muay Thai team's coach and manager entered the ring, protesting furiously at the illegal kick to the extent that the manager laid down on the ring floor till the closing ceremony of the match, disrupting the live telecast as authorities deemed it too inappropriate and thereby stopped the live telecast. Ironically, although the Muay Thai team protested against just a single foul by Zhan Kaiyin, they made no mentioned about the fouls done by their own fighter Lamsongkram. Post-fight, Lamsongkram faced much humiliation in his home country and abroad as he had most definitely given his people and his art a bad name by losing to a seemingly inferior art and artist. He also left his camp, Chuwattana Gym, as he felt he had disgraced it and his teacher, Kongdet Chuwattana. He eventually joined TMT (Tiger Muay Thai) training camp. He reportedly spent some months in a Buddhist Temple in China to prepare for another fight against a Sanshou fighter due to be held in February 2012, which he again lost by knockout by way of a 3 punch combo.
The Japanese boxing commission banned the boxing promoters to offer Lamsongkram for boxing matches in Japan 2005 because of 5 consecutive losses by knock out.[2]
