Lalit Mohan Sharma
Lalit Mohan Sharma (February 12, 1928 – November 3, 2008) was the 24th Chief Justice of India. He was the son of L.N. Sinha, former Attorney General of India. He served as Chief Justice of India from November 18, 1992 until February 11, 1993. Mr. Sharma was born on February 12, 1928 in Bhumihar Brahmin family. He graduated with a BA (Hons) from Patna University in 1946 and his LLB in 1948.[1]
Legal career
Passed B.A. Hons. (Patna University ) in 1946. Passed B.L. (Patna University) in 1948. Enrolled as articled clerk in High Court, Patna in 1949. Started practice in High Court, Patna as an Advocate - Feb. 6, 1950. Enrolled as Supreme Court Advocate - March 6, 1957. Later nominated as Senior Advocate. Took charge (oath) as Judge, Patna High Court on April 12, 1973. [2]
He joined the Supreme Court of India on October 5, 1987 and appointed as Chief Justice of India on November 18, 1992.
He retired from the judicial service on Feb. 11, 1993.
Family and early life
Lalit Mohan Sharma was born on February 12, 1928 in the village of Musi (Belaganj, Gaya, Bihar). He was born in a religious Bhumihar Brahmin family. He grew up as an intelligent person. He was always keen to help others. He had orientation towards RSS in his early life. His wife, is also an unassuming and religious-minded person. She was born in a highly respected family in Mauritus. However, she assimilated herself into the Indian cuture with ease. She learnt to speak MAGHI (the dialect of Magadh region) with ease. She always supported him in his endevour to grow up as an effective judge. His father Lal Narayan Sinha was the Attorney General of India during the Prime Minister-ship of Indira Gandhi. Mr. L.N. Sinha was also the Solicitor General of India from July 17, 1972 until April 5, 1977. Before becoming the Solicitor General of India, he was the Advocate General of Bihar for several years.
Death
Justice Sharma died on November 3, 2008 in Patna at his residence following a long illness. He was 80 years old. He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.[3] Soon after receiving news of the death of Justice Sharma, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited his residence and offered floral tributes.
In his message, Mr Kumar described the departed former CJI as a great legal luminary who left an indelible mark on the prestigious judicial profession.
