Lake Street Dive is an indie jazz and soul band that was founded in 2005 in Boston, Massachusetts. The band consists of Rachael Price (lead vocals), Mike "McDuck" Olson (trumpet, guitar), Bridget Kearney (upright bass), and Mike Calabrese (drums). They met while attending the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. The band was named after a street with many dive bars in Olson's hometown. The band tours extensively in both North America and Europe from their base in Brooklyn.

History

The band played a song written by Bridget Kearney which was submitted to the John Lennon Songwriting Contest. As a result, Kearney won the Jazz category in 2005.[1] With the cash award, Lake Street Dive recorded their debut CD in 2006, in this episode.... They did another self release called Promises, Promises and a video filmed live at the Lizard Lounge in 2010. They signed with Signature Sounds Recordings, who first released Lake Street Dive in 2011.

In 2013 they played over 150 gigs in more than 50 different cities, spread between 32 states and 8 countries.[2] "We love all the same songs..We sing along in the car" is the opening line from the only song they co-wrote together.

They have come to the attention of many via a YouTube video featuring the band gathered around a single microphone, performing a cover of Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” shot on a Brighton, Massachusetts, street corner. In December 2013, T Bone Burnett asked them to perform on the Another Day, Another Time show at Town Hall featuring music from and inspired by the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis.

Their lead singer was under contract to another label, Claire Vision. This prevented them from releasing additional albums with Ms. Price. In late 2013 an agreement was reached and Lake Street Dive announced the release of album Bad Self Portraits in February 2014.[3]

The band published some of its tour dates for 2014, which will include several music festivals. After kicking back a bit in January 2014, their Bad Self Portraits tour is booked in over 30 venues in the next two months.[4]

Influences

Price and Kearney both grew up singing in choirs. Most of the members had classical music training growing up. All Lake Street Dive members seemed to migrate through jazz to the present. Some members will say there is a lot of '90s music, others say they were inspired by the '60s soul, and all profess to love the entire Beatles discography. Sometimes they will describe their music as Pop, or perhaps Swing, with a touch of Bluegrass.

Their traditional Halloween specials and covers perhaps give a better idea of the genres that influence them. These range from songs by The Mamas and the Papas, ABBA, The Drifters, Fleetwood Mac, Hall & Oates, Jackson 5 and Paul McCartney.
