From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lady Cathleen Blanche Lily Eliot, later Seyfried, later still Hudson (29 July 1921October 1994) was the younger daughter of John Granville Cornwallis Eliot, 6th Earl of St Germans and Lady Blanche Linnie Somerset, daughter of the 9th Duke of Beaufort. She is the mother of the present Baron Herbert.

Her father died from pneumonia on 22 March 1922, whilst recuperating in South Africa following a riding accident, leaving issue two daughters. His earldom and associated titles thus passed to his first cousin. Her mother, the widowed Countess, remarried George Francis Valentine Scott Douglas and had a son James Douglas (later Sir James Scott Douglas, Bt) [1] by her second husband; this half-brother died unmarried.

Lady Cathleen married firstly, on 1946-11-15, Captain John Beeton Seyfried, Royal Horse Guards (1923–2008), and had issue, one daughter, and one son, David John Seyfried-Herbert, 19th Baron Herbert. The marriage was dissolved 1956.

  2. David John Seyfried-Herbert, 19th Baron Herbert, born 1952-03-03 (see Barony of Herbert).

She married secondly, on 1957-01-07, Sir Havelock Henry Trevor Hudson (1919–1996), and had a further daughter and son

Issue:

  2. Michael Guy Havelock Hudson, born 1962-03-14.

Claim and succession to the Barony Herbert

Her uncle the Henry Somerset, 10th Duke of Beaufort died childless in 1984, and this made her the junior co-heiress, with the co-heiresses of her elder sister as senior co-heiresses, to the baronies Herbert and Botetourt. At her own death in 1994, this junior half-share in both baronies was inherited by her elder son David. The barony Herbert was eventually called out of abeyance in his favour in 2002; that of Botetourt still remains in abeyance.[2]

Notes

  1. GRO Register of Births: DEC 1926 1a 525 ST GEO HAN SQ. Ronald G. Douglas, mmn = Somerset
  2. Although David Seyfried, as he then was, was the junior heir, he had inherited a half-share of the barony as his mother's elder son. His aunt Lady Rosemary Rubens (February 26, 1919 -April 20, 1963) had been thrice married, and had two daughters by her first and third marriages. The elder daughter Davina (1940-1976) died in a car crash with her son, leaving issue one daughter Frederica Samantha Mary Cope, now Mrs David Arthur Thomas (born 1963). Her younger daughter Alexandra Rubens (b. 1950) is now Mrs Alexandra Peyronel. Both women, co-heiresses to one-fourth each of the barony of Botetourt have issue who will inherit their mothers' shares in that barony.
