Kyle James Kozub Mooney (born September 4, 1984) is an American comedian known for his sketch videos with the comedy group "Good Neighbor"[2][3][4] and his man-on-the-street interviews for Jimmy Kimmel Live and Sports Show with Norm MacDonald.[5]

He also currently appears as Rory on the HBO comedy series Hello Ladies and has most recently joined the cast of Saturday Night Live as a featured player.[6]

Life and career

Mooney was born in San Diego, California, the son of Linda (Kozub), a reporter, and Brian Mooney.[7] He graduated from Scripps Ranch High School in 2003 where he won Best Actor as Prospero in Shakespeare's The Tempest.[8] Mooney attended the University of Southern California[9][10] and majored in Film.[11] He performed improv and sketch comedy with collegiate group Commedus Interruptus. In 2003 the three new members added to Commedus were Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, and Nick Rutherford.[12] In 2007 the same three would form the sketch comedy group "Good Neighbor" along with Kyle's best friend, director and editor Dave McCary.[13] Bennett and McCary joined Mooney on SNL. That Purp Scurp from up north is where their comedic attitudes originate.[14]

Reception from other comedians

Mooney has been praised by comedian Louis C.K. during a Reddit Q&A in which C.K. said he didn't know many "up and comers" but told fans to "search on youtube for Good Neighbor" because the "guy in it named Kyle makes me laugh."[15] Writer/director Adam McKay favorited the Good Neighbor sketch "Arrival" on his website Funny or Die and said "What makes this short work is the acting. They play it very real and it makes the turn all the funnier."[16] Even Steven Spielberg sent Mooney, Bennett, Rutherford, and McCary a personal "acknowledgement" after being impressed with the Hook parody sketch: Unbelievable Dinner. It read: "My daughter, Sasha, showed me your film and we just howled with laughter. Keep making funny movies.---Steven"[17][18]

Credits

Mooney has written for television programs such as Nathan for You on Comedy Central and the MTV animated comedy series DJ & the Fro.[19] He has appeared on Best Friends Forever ,Wilfred,[19] and Epic Rap Battles of History.[20]

Saturday Night Live

Mooney, along with John Milhiser, Michael Patrick O'Brien, Noël Wells, Brooks Wheelan, and his comedy partner and friend, Beck Bennett, joined the thirty-ninth season of Saturday Night Live to fill the void left by the recent departures of Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Jason Sudeikis. Mooney made his debut on September 28, 2013. His celebrity impressions include Criss Angel, Jason Schwartzman, Axl Rose, and Matthew McConaughey. His only original character so far is his Bruce Chandling character (a hack veteran stand-up comic trying to make it as an actor) he created for his YouTube videos
