Kyegegwa District is a district in Western Uganda. It is named after its 'chief town', Kyegegwa, where the district headquarters are located.
Location
Kyegegwa District is bordered by Kibaale District to the north, Mubende District to the east, Kiruhura District to the south, Kamwenge District to the southwest and Kyenjojo District to the northwest. Kyegegwa, the location of the district headquarters, is located approximately 110 kilometres (68 mi), by road, east of Fort Portal, the largest town in the sub-region.[1] The coordinates of the district are:00 29N, 31 03E.
Overview
Kyegegwa District was created by Act of the Ugandan Parliament, on 1 July 2009. Prior to that the district was part of Kyenjojo District.[2] Kyegegwa District is part of Toro sub-region, which is coterminous with Toro Kingdom. The districts that constitute the sub-region include:
- Kabarole District
- Kamwenge District
- Kyegegwa District
- Kyenjojo District
According to the 2002 national census, the sub-region was home to an estimated one million people at that time.
Population
The national census in 2002 estimated the population of the district at about 110,900. The district estimated mid - year population for 2012 is 159,800, the District has one County Kyaka, one Town Council Kyegegwa T/C 7 Sub counties namely Hapuuyo, Kakabara, Kasule, Kyegegwa, Mpara, Ruyonza and Rwentuha sub county, 42 Parish/wards and 459 villages and 93% of the population is rural.
