Kyankwanzi District is a district in Central Uganda. The district is named after its 'chief town' of Kyankwanzi.

Location

Kyankwanzi District is bordered by Masindi District to the north, Nakaseke District to the east, Kiboga District to the southeast, Mubende District to the south, Kibaale District to the southwest and Hoima District to the northwest. The district headquarters at Kyankwanzi are located approximately 161 kilometres (100 mi), by road, northwest of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. ^[1] The coordinates of the district are:01 12N, 31 48E.

Overview

Kyankwanzi District was created by Act of Parliament in July 2010. Prior to then, it was part of Kiboga District. The reasons given to justify the formation of the district, included the long distances that residents had to travel to access district services at Kiboga. The district is subdivided into the following administrative divisions:

• Mulagi
• Ntwetwe
• Gayaza
• Wattuba
• Butemba
• Nsambya
• Kyankwanzi Town Council

Population

The 2002 national census estimated the population of the district at 120,600. The current population of the district is not known, as of January 2011. In 2009, Kyankwanzi District, then known as Kyankwanzi sub-county in Kiboga District, was recorded as the poorest administrative area in Central Uganda, with 38% of the population living on less than US$1.00 a day.^[2]

Economic activities

Agriculture and livestock farming are the two major economic activities in the district. Food crops include the following:

• Cassava

• Matooke
• Millet
• Sweet Potatoes and
• Sorghum
