Kyakhtinsky District (Russian: Кяхтинский райо́н; Buryat: Хяагтын аймаг) is an administrative[1] and municipal[2] district (raion), one of the twenty-one in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia. It is located in the south of the republic. The area of the district is 4,684 square kilometers (1,809 sq mi).[3] Its administrative center is the town of Kyakhta.[1] Population: 39,785 (2010 Census);[4] 40,673 (2002 Census);[7] 45,224 (1989 Census).[8] The population of Kyakhta accounts for 50.3% of the district's total population.[4]
History
The district was established on December 12, 1923.[3]
Miscellaneous
Besides Kyakhta, another major place is the urban-type settlement of Naushki, which serves as the railway point of entry into Mongolia.[9]
