Kwon So-hyun (born August 30, 1994) is a South Korean idol singer, rapper, and dancer. She is a member of the Korean girl group 4Minute under Cube Entertainment. She was also a former member of the Korean girl group "Orange."
Early life
Sohyun was born in Seoul, South Korea on August 30, 1994. She attended Kumho Junior High School and Pungmoon Girls' High School, graduating from the latter in February 2013.[1] She was ranked fourth in her class.[2]
Sohyun debuted as a member of the group Orange in 2005 when she was 12 years old. The band released their debut album titled ‘We Are Orange’ with the title track Our Star. The group was disbanded in late 2005 due to cyber bullying and anti-fan cafes against the group.[3]
In middle school, Sohyun began registering for audition academies. There, she met a representative of an agency and became a trainee in less than two months. Sohyun was grouped together with the other 4Minute trainees, filling the vacancy caused by Soyou's departure. Soyou eventually made her debut with SISTAR.[4]
Career
4Minute
In June 2009, Sohyun made her debut as the youngest member of the girl group 4Minute under Cube Entertainment, with their single Hot Issue. The group promoted the song from its release until August.
At the end of August, 4Minute released a mini-album called "For Muzik" which was alongside their second single, "Muzik". 4Minute won a mutizen award and an Mnet award for their second single "Muzik". Their third single "What A Girl Wants" was released shortly after the release of their EP.
After a successful promotion period, the group released a new mini-album entitled HuH (Hit Your Heart) for their comeback on May 19, 2010. And after almost a year of hiatus, the group then released their first full length Korean album titled 4MINUTES LEFT. The album and their two lead promotional singles maintained their positions in the top 10 of many Korean REAL TIME Charts. After the promotions of their first full length album, the group focused on their Japanese activities.
And after more than a year of hiatus, the group finally made a comeback on April 9, 2012 with their third mini album, ‘Volume Up’ which topped music charts and winning the group several music show awards.
After another year, the group made their comeback on April 25, 2013 with their fourth mini-album, Name Is 4Minute which did great on music charts and gave 4Minute triple crown on music show's awards.
Solo activities
Aside from being a member of 4Minute, Sohyun has had small cameo roles on television and also participated in several variety shows. Sohyun starred in Teen Top's music video "Going Crazy" where she played the role of L.Joe's love interest. She was also one of the celebrity guesst together with 2AM's Jinwoon for the documentary A Pink News which aired on the Korean cable channel TrendE.
Sohyun, along with 11 other female idols, took part in the 2013 KBS Lunar New Year variety show, "Princess Project - Resurrection of the Royal Family", a spin-off based on the 2012 MBC hit drama The Moon That Embraces the Sun.[5]
Sohyun was selected as a "Special MC" for Weekly Idol's Second Idol Awards.[6] She later reprised her role in the episodes featuring 2YOON and Huh Gak, alongside BtoB's Ilhoon.
Sohyun, along with team mates Gayoon and Jihyun took part in the archery segment of the 2013 Idol Star Athletics-Archery Championships.[7] The team later competed in an another archery competition against SISTAR on Dream Team in June.[8]
On 5 June 2013, Sohyun and Gayoon took part in the ceremonial first pitch for the LG Twins against the Doosan Bears. Gayoon threw the first ball whilst Sohyun was on the plate to bat.[9]
On October 22, it was announced that Sohyun will play the lead in the movie Hwanggu, in which she plays a spirited young college student who supports her boyfriend as struggles to win the national taekwondo title and also the prejudices of a multi-ethnical family he experiences, having a Korean mother and Filipino father.[10]
On 13 January 2014, Sohyun took part in an archery competition in 2014 Idol Star Athletics Championship. She went to the final round and won gold medal against Sistar Bora.
On January 19, 2014 was revealed that 4Minute have lent their voice for Brave Brothers‘ tenth anniversary album. According to Brave Entertainment, track titled “Only Gained Weight” will be released on January 20 at midnight, and it features 4Minute members HyunA, Gayoon, and Sohyun. “Only Gained Weight” song is described as a medium-tempo pop song, and is both composed and written by the hit producer. With their husky and attractive voices, the girls express the feelings of a female, who longs after her previous lover.[11]
SoHyun has been appointed as the ambassador for Kolon Archery Team. Kolon Archery Team had held a appointment ceremony for ‘Archery-dol’ Kwon SoHyun on January 28, 2014 in Yongin. On the same day, SoHyun taught archery to children in the area, spending a wonderful time together. SoHyun expressed, “As much as my appointment as the ambassador for Kolon Archery Team, I will show my undivided passion as well as to raise awareness about Kolon Archery Team,” revealing her thoughts.[12]
