Kupwara (Hindi: कुपवाड़ा) is a town and a notified area committee in Kupwara District in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Among the many tourist places in Kupwara, Lolab Valley has special significance. Sogam is a Tehsil and a really beautiful place to visit for its meadows, mountains, gushing waters, and fresh air.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Kupwara had a population of 14,711. Males constitute 61% of the population and females 39%. Kupwara has an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 64%, and female literacy is 41%.However the literacy has increased since last census. In Kupwara, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.
People
A majority of the people are Muslims while there is a small community of Sikhs in both Kupwara and Handwara tehsils. kashmiris are the largest ethnic group followed by paharis and Gujjars. In Kupwara and Handwara tehsils, Kashmiris form the majority and Gujjars and Paharis live in upper areas of these regions. However, Paharis speaking people form the majority in the remote and hilly tehsil of karnah. People of Kupwara speak a different form of Kashmiri language. Although its vocabulary is similar to the other form of Kashmiri, it is pronounced differently.
Education
Kupwara has a literacy rate of 50.50%. The district has got 04 colleges, 22 Higher Secondary Schools and 1289 educational institutions. Govt Degree College, Kupwara is the largest college in the district with total enrollment exceeding 3000. New private English medium schools are also creeping up . Education has become common in modern times.
