Kumkum – Ek Pyara Sa Bandhan (Hindustani pronunciation: [ˈkʊmkʊm]; English: A lovely bond) was an Indian television soap opera that aired on STAR Plus channel

The show aired from Monday to Friday afternoons. The soap ended on March 13, 2009.

Plot summary

The soap opera tells the tale of the Wadhwa family and its daughter-in-law, Kumkum. She is happily married to Jatin. However, he dies of a brain tumor while she is expecting their first child. The Wadhwas decide to get their young daughter-in-law re-married, and find an eligible young man named Vishal. However, when obstacles arise to prevent that marriage, Jatin's younger brother Sumit impulsively marries Kumkum in order to save her from social disgrace.

Renuka, who loved Sumit tries everything to separate the two. When she fails, she tries to prove her fiancé Akash as a piracy photographer. One night Renuka says that Akash is after her, and Sumit in a drugged state, shoots him. Vishal is also in with Renuka and tells KumKum that he can prove Sumit innocent if she signs on some divorce papers. Kumkum hesitates at first, but can't think of anything else to do so she signs and keeps the papers. Renuka gets a hold of the papers and shows them to Sumit in jail, and convinces him to sign them. It is revealed in court that Akash is alive when he escapes do from Vishal and Renuka to court. When Sumit comes out, he is angry at Kumkum for signing on the divorce papers. The court orders them to one week of counseling before any decision.

Sumit starts living with Renuka as he is kicked out of the house because he blamed Kumkum. Kumkum comes up with a plan and decides to make Sumit realize he belongs at home, not with Renuka. She takes Dhruv, her newborn to Renuka's house and tells Summit and her that Dhruv is their responsibility now. Kumkum comes to visit and later sends Prahbha to live with them. As Sumit lives with Renuka, he realizes how selfish she is. He thinks about how Kumkum looked after everyone and then he thinks about Renuka, who doesn't have a care for anyone anytime. Rakesh starts helping Akash and Kumkum in their plan, but Renuka manages to convince him to come on her side with money. Kumkum takes Rakesh's passport and with that Rakesh comes to Sumit's house, where Kumkum and Sumit are and tells her to give her passport back and apologizes. He also tells everything about Renuka.

Renuka then tells Sumit that his company has lost 200 crores and should start a new life with her in New Zealand but he refuses. He has to have a show to show the foreign delegates in order to get the contract. Kumkum sells her jewellery so that Sumit can pay the dancers to come perform, but Renuka ruins the plan. Kumkum decides to step in. Renuka breaks a vase in the changing room and Kumkum steps on it. She dances with bleeding feet. Summit gets the contract and starts falling for Kumkum because of her selflessness and care for others. He leaves Renuka and returns home. Kumkum decides to forgive Renuka instead of punish her and she leaves. The court decides not to give divorce to Kumkum and Sumit.

On the other hand, Rahul has fallen in love with his employee, Tara. Tara tries to commit suicide when Rahul says he can't marry her because of his fortune. Tara tells her mother that she faked the love for Rahul so she can have a way in to the Wadhwa house. Meanwhile, the new relationship between Kumkum and Sumit begins as a compromise but ripens into deep love.

A woman starts calling the Wadhwa house asking for Rahul. She claims that she married Rahul and they had a son, now she's at her last stage in cancer and wants to hand over her son Kirtan to his father Kirtan, but tells Kumkum not to force Rahul to take him. Rahul, on the other hand gets married to Tara as Kumkum is late in stopping the wedding. Kumkum doesn't tell anyone that Kirtan is Rahul's son, and while the two of them talk, Tara thinks that Kumkum is the mother of Kirtan. Soon everyone in the family starts to think the same, so Kumkum decides to leave with Kirtan. While she leaves, Sumit finds out, after some research that Kirtan is not Kumkums but Rahils son. Tara decides to take revenge and leaves to Dubai as she takes Sumit's signatures to transfer money to her account. The Wadhwa house is put on sale because of all the missing money. The police find Tara and all the money is returned.

Brim bushman bring home Renuka and introduces her to the family as his wife. It's revealed that Renuka and Brij had a contract marriage in order to separate Kumkum and Sumit. Renuka and Brij create big misunderstandings between the two. One day Renuka finds Chanda, a look a like of Kumkum. She kidnaps Kumkum with the help of Viru and replaces her with Chanda. Chanda is doing this for Renuka because she wants her brother to start walking again. When Chanda finds out about Renuka, she decides to do whatever she can to find Kumkum. Kumkums and Chanda switch places. Kumkum takes Sumit to find Chanda without telling him where they're going but Brij manages to get Sumit to the office leaving Kumkum to go alone. The car Kumkum was going in gets into an accident. Reunka is shocked to see Kumkum back home after true accident. It's revealed that Chanda sacrificed herself in the accident so Kumkum could live. Abhay, who is Chanda's lover thinks that Kumkum is Chanda. Kumkum is pregnant at the time as well. Kumkum tries to tell the truth to Abhay but because of Shamu, Chanda's brother, she pretends to be Chanda. This creates misunderstandings, and Rahul strikes to tell Sumit that Kumkum is cheating on him. The whole family thinks that Kumkum is Chanda, and she finally gets a DNA TEST proving otherwise. The family accepts her. Abhay still wants Chanda but Kumkum gives him her ashes as proof. Abhay wants revenge against Kumkum and Sumit so he make Sumit lose money in business and the Wadhwa house and farmhouse are sold to none other than Abhay. The Wadhwa family lives in a chawl when they can't find anywhere else to go. Nainas (Rahul's second wife) and Kumkum start a catering business to support the family while Sumit goes to Dubai for a job. He gets arrested for not having a work permit and comes back. Sumit gets a new house for the family to live in. Sumit accidentally shots his friend Ashit when he wanted to shoot Abhay and kills him. Abhay gives him the 100 crore that Sumit needs but only after he makes him take the poisoned pill, which will make Sumit die in seven days. Abhay is sent to jail after several encounters with the Wadhwa house.

His sister, Abha, whom Kumkum had saved from an oncoming truck tells Abhay she will get revenge from the Wadhwa family for him. Abha comes and stays at the Wadhwa house. Sumit is healed. Meanwhile Kumkum finds out she has brain tumor. Sumit sees her with another man who is none other than Rohit, her doctor and is heartbroken because he thinks she's seeing someone else. One day he hears Kumkum discussing her brain tumor with Rohit, and calls him. He finds out that in order for Kumkum to survive, she needs an operation that can only happen when she aborts her child. Kumkum decides to do the operation without abortion, which can lead to her dying. The operation was not successful, and Kumkum has one month to live.

Sukanya's husband, Akash dies on the other hand and Sukayana finds out he was married to someone else as well and had two children with her, Salil and Sanket. The will of Akash says he has handed over everything to Sumit Wadhwa. Sanket decides to kill Sumit to obtain the property. After their cars break failing, Sumit decides to hand over the property responsibilities to Salil, but he rips them and refuses. Sumit and Kumkum tell Salil and his family to live with them so that they can do their own respected businesses without interfering with the others', they agree. Malli starts liking Salil but she gets murdered by a mysterious murderer. It's revealed that Salil had sent that killer to murder Nalli, and he tells Kumkum his intention is to ruin the Wadhwa family. It's revealed his revenge is for Renuka who is now in the mental hospital. Salil is obsessed over Renuka and decides to kill Sumit because she won't stop saying his name. Kumkum is proven mentally unstable in court for custody hearing of Dhruv, and is sent to a mental asylum. Kumkum kills Salil. Rahul and Sanket are arrested for helping Salil. Sumit takes the blame. It's revealed that Renuka killed Salil because he wanted to kill Sumit.

Kumkum is accused of Salil's murder in court when she confesses to save Sumit. Yash, kumkum's new lawyer gets bent on revenge after Sumit attacks him. They lose the case. He teams up with Reunka. Kumkum dies in jail after an attack on her. Later, it's revealed she's alive and that Sumit released her in time. Yash is actually helping Sumit and Kumkum by knowing Renuka's plans. Renuka kidnaps Yash's daughter Gauri, and makes Kumkum make Sumit think that she is cheating on him. Sumit finally gets frustrated and the family members want them to married to Abha and he agrees. Gauri escapes and tells Sumit why Kumkum was trying to go away from him. The family members are shocked to find Kumkum alive. The two get married again. They go for their honeymoon.

Krish, Harsh's cousin's son comes to live with the Wadhwas. Karan enters, Jatin's (Kumkum's first husband) look alike. Everyone is confused. Kumkum hears Rakesh's conspiracy about switching Karan and Jatin's bodies. Karan is actually Jatin. Veena wants Kumkum to live as Jatin's wife. Karan (Jatin) remembers everything. Sumit and Kumkum cannot be husband and wife and are separated by Jatin. Jatin wants Sumit to forget Kumkum and let him live with her after he finds out about their marriage. It's revealed that Jatin is actually Manik who wants the Wadhwa property. Harsh finds out but gets injured so no one knows. Kumkum catches Manik trying to posin Harsh. The family members get to know Manik's reality after he's arrested in a trap set by Sumit. He escapes but is shot down by police after he has a hostage. Kumkum gives birth to twins.They bring up their three children, Dhruv (biological son of Jatin), Sharman and Aashka.

There is a 20 year leap. Dhruv is coming back home. Sumit and the Wadhwa family want to get Dhruv married to Siya, a family friend's daughter. Dhruv says no to the relationship and tells the family he loves Antara. Antara and Dhruv get married, and Dhruv and Siya remain friends. Antara puts her happiness before others, which is noticed by Veena, which results in misunderstandings. Antara gets tired of being blamed and her role turns negative. She gets jeleous seeing Dhruv and Siya together and decides to separate the two. She starts at job at Ahwin's office an teams up with him to destroy the Wadhwas. But that doesn't stop her from taking revenge from Kumkum for telling Dhruv to leave the house with Antara, which she only did because her family didn't like Antara.

Aashka falls in love with her director, Abhishek from modelling. She's modelling with the ad agency that her parents said no to. Sumit and Kumkum don't think that Abhishek has a good character and that he doesn't deserve Aashka. Aashka starts staying with Abhishek. One night at a club, Abhishek drugs Aashka and takes her to his room. They spend a night, and then he dumps her. He says all he wanted to do from the beginning was breaks her.

Sumit's health deteriorates. A friend of Sumit, Dr.Vikram reveals to him that he has brain tumour, which indicates he only has 1–2 months to live. He decides to make sure his son stands up and takes responsibilities. Sumit kicks Sharman out of the house because he did not find a job. Sharman starts staying with Neeli, a girl he likes. He gets his first job as a rickshaw driver. Dr. Vikram tells Sumit he can cure his brain tumor wiymsn operation, but he could lose his life if it's unsuccessful. Aashka is pregnant. Aashka decides to marry Dr.Vikram. Sumit's brain tumor erupts. Operation is successful, but Sumit only remembers Kumkum. He gets Alzheimer's. Neeti decides to marry mohit but she starts liking Sharman. The power of attorney goes to Dhruv. Dhruv terminates Sumit from his position.

Neeti tells Sharman she loves him, Sharman in turn realizes he loves Neeti too but it's too late, as Neeti has been engaged to Mohit. Antara plans to create a rift between Dhruv and his parents. Sumit transfers the house to Dhruv and leaves to u.s for treatment. Kumkum leaves the house and returns as Santo to expose Antara. The Wadhwa family helps Kumkum. Sumit comes back and helps too. Sharman pretends to be a ghost to scare Antara into signing the property papers. When she learns he's alive, she kidnaps him. Kumkum manages to find and save him with the help of Nivedita, who had crashed her car with Antara's when she kidnapped Sharman, and exposes Antara. She is arrested.

Rajjo's friend, adulation comes to. Isit with her daughter-in-law, Mishri. Mishri's husband left her on their wedding night. Kumkum and Nevidita decide to find Mahesh, mishri's husband. It's revealed that Nevidita's husband, Rakesh, is also Mishri's husband, Mahesh. Mahesh decides to leave with Mishri. Nevidita's dad Mr. Mitral, dies. Nevidita wants revenge from Kumkum. A man named Katara introduces himself as Nevidita's husband, on Nevidita's demand. Katara dies and Kumkum and Sumit are the suspects. Meanwhile Aashka and Dr. Vikram separate even though they don't want to because Abhishek is back. Kumkum gets arrested. Nevidita continues to get close to Sumit to create misunderstandings between Kumkum and him. One day Sumit sees Katara alive, and realizes Nevidita's plans. Kumkum is released from mail because of last minute evidence. Nevidita falls in love with Sumit. Kumkum and Sumit are in court again for the murder of Katara. Katara comes to court and reveals Nevedita's plans. He thanks Dhruv and Sharman for rescuing him. Nevidita is convicted.

Neeti and Sharman get engaged. Neeti and Sharman plan to bring Dhruv and Siya closer. Kumkum starts getting nightmares and sees the things she saw in her dreams in real life. Sumit and kidnapped and shot by terrorists. Kumkum goes missing. Sumit goes into a coma. After a one year leap, the Wadhwa family perform Kumkum's 1 year death ceremony, meanwhile Sumit comes out of his coma. Sumit believes Kumkum is still alive. He goes out to find her and comes across two thieves, Amandeep and Nimbu, who help him find Kumkum. It's shown that Kumkum has been living with Sudha as Krishna and has lost her memory.

Back at the Wadwha house, Neeti breaks her relationship with Sharman. Dhruv and Siya break up as well. Sumit comes to Kumkum's (Krishna's) engagement with Sanjay in time, but fails to prove he is her husband. Krishna (Kumkum) starts liking Sumit. Sumit threatens to kill Krishna (Kumkum) if Sanjay marries her. Kumkum remembers everything after Sanjay shoots at Sumit. Meanwhile Dhruv and Sharman leave the house one at a time. The bullet huts Amandeep instead of Sumit and she dies. They go back home.

Brijbushan wants to kill Kumkum and Sumit. He tells them to sign the property to his name or he'll kill them and Sumit does. Brij plants a bomb near Kumkum and Sumit, but they are still alive. Kumkum decides to bring Dhruv and Sharman back home. The Wadhwas are kicked out by Sukayana and Brij. Dhruv works with Brij and tells his plans to Kumkum. Rahul helps the Wadhwa family get back home. Rahul wants Kumkum and Sumit to help his daughters, Pooja and Pamela understand relationships and culture. Kumkum releases Pooja and Pamela out of jail and everyone's happy to see their changed behaviour.

Kumkum finds out that Antara has died. Dhruv and Siya and Sharman and Neeti all are ready to get married to one another. Kumkum is shocked to find out that Meenu, a women she had met has died, and that her kid is actually Antara's. Kumkum finds out that Antara and her child were kidnapped and Meenu was an informer to get money from the Wadhwas. Antara is alive, which means Dhruv and Siya cannot get married. Siya leaves Dhruv when she comes to know about Antara and her child. Renuka is back. She is Neeti's massi's friend. Kumkum brings Antara home. Neeti breaks her relationship with Sharman once again. Dhruv denies marrying Siya after seeing Antara apologizing for her sins. Siya is pregnant with Dhruv's child. Sharman, in order to save his family's grace and Siya's as well, marries her. Siya hates Sharman for taking this decision, but Sharman wants to mend his relationship with Siya.

Nobody likes Antara and want her to leave. Kumkum says that she will lebe if Antara leaves. Renuka brainwashes Neeti against Kumkum. Siya wants a divorce from Sharman. Neeti wants revenge and marries Rahul to gain entry into the Wadhwa house. Kumkum finds out about Pamela's drug addiction problem. Antara's kidnapper is killed in the backyard of the Wadhwa house. When the police find Antara guilty, she kills herself. Later, it's revealed that Antara was murdered and Siya and Dhruv are suspects. Dr.Ghosh calls Sumit to tell him he found a clue, but he is murdered before Sumit and Kumkum reach there as well. Siya and Dhruv are released when Sumit hands in a letter to the police from the killer that stated he will be at a party. Rahul is revealed to be the killer of Rajiv (Pooja's boyfriend), Antara, Dr.Ghosh. Rahul says that he killed Rajiv because he wasn't a good match for Pooja. He killed Antara by accident when he wanted to kill Neeti. He wanted to kill Neeti because she was blackmailing him about her knowing that he killed Rajiv and had forced him to marry her. Everyone wants Neeti to leave but Harsh wants to give her a chance to prove herself.

Dhruv wants to marry Siya and wants Sharman to marry Neeti like it was planned before. Siya says no as she and Sharman had decided to give their relationship time. Sharman convinces her as he says that no one gets a second chance to marry their love, but Siya says that only Sharman had supported her when she needed someone and decides to stay with him. Sharman is happy with the decision. Neeti tries her best to separate Sharman and Siya but ends up bringing them closer.

Kajal enters the Wadhwa house with the plan for revenge, and to bring Kumkum back to her father, Pulkit's life. Kumkum denies betraying Pulkit. Pulkit wants Kajal to finish off Sumit. On the other hand Siya loses her child after falling off a building. Kajal's intentions change after seeing kumkum's care. She saves Kumkum and Sumit from being shot by Pulkit by coming in between the shot and them. She apologizes and dies. His daughter's death doesn't stop him from getting Kumkum. He follows Sumit and Kumkum. Kumkum and Sumit go on a Yatra and decide to get married again. They wished their family was with them. Pulkit comes there and stops the wedding. He points the gun at Sumit but Kumkum comes in between and gets shot. Sumit kills shoots himself as he cannot live with Kumkum. They both die at the same time, holding hands, on their wedding anniversary day.

Then Kumkum and Sumit Wadhwa die. They are reborn as Kumkum Mishra and Sumit Raichand. Sumit is very shy and living with a big family in Delhi and Kumkum is a fun-loving prankster living with her family in a village. Both hate each other after meeting in college but, owing to circumstances, they have to pretend to be married in front of their families. In this life, too, their love passes through many trials and challenges. After all the problems are solved, Kumkum and Sumit live happily ever after.
