Biography
At the start of the 2010/11 season, Krzysztof Urbański became Chief Conductor of Trondheim Symfoniorkester having been appointed only a week after his highly successful debut with the orchestra in September 2009. In addition, he takes up the position of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s seventh Music Director in September 2011, and at age 28, is currently the youngest music director among major orchestras in the United States.
Undoubtedly one of the most interesting conducting talents to emerge from Poland in recent years, Krzysztof Urbański has been attracting a considerable amount of attention throughout Europe where this season he returns to the NDR Sinfonieorchester (with whom he conducts Stravinsky’s Firebird and Mahler’s Symphony No. 5), SWR Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart (offering Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra), hr-Sinfonieorchester and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. This season, he will also make his debuts with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker, MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Further ahead he appears with WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Finnish and Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He will also tour to major European venues with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and Sol Gabetta as soloist in spring 2013. Following highly successful debuts with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra in autumn 2009, he has been invited to return to both in spring 2011.
Polish repertoire plays an important part in Urbański’s programming. He led the opening concert of the Polish focus at the 2010 Schleswig Holstein Festival with Sinfonia Varsovia, conducting Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with Eva Kupiec and Górecki's Symphony No. 3. He made his debut at the 2010 Grant Park Festival in Chicago with a programme including Lutosĺawski’s Concerto for Orchestra and conducts Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima with NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg in autumn 2010.
Urbański graduated from the Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw in 2007, and in the same year was the unanimous First Prize Winner of the Prague Spring International Conducting Competition. He works regularly with all the major Polish Orchestras, including Sinfonia Varsovia, the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra, and served as Assistant Conductor to the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007-2009. The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will be honoring Urbański by appointing him Adjunct Professor of Music (Orchestral Conducting) when his tenure with Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra begins in 2011.[5]
