Krn[1] (2244 m) is the highest mountain in Krn Mountains. The mountain is located 50 km from the Adriatic Sea. Krn covers southwestern part of Julian Alps, it is surrounded by river soča and smaller rivers Lepenjica and Tolminka. On the Prehodci pass the mountain joins Bohinj mountains. Krn has a mighty western wall, which is best viewed from Kobarid and Drežnica.
There is a big pasture called Planina Kuhinja which is used for cattle and milk production. Other smaller villages on the southern side of the mountain are Vrsno, Krn, Drežnica,Drežniške ravne and Magozd.
On the northern side there is beautiful Krnsko Jezero- Lake Krn, which is the biggest of its kind in Slovenia.
During First World War there was a lot of fierce fighting in the area. The top of the neighbouring mountain Batognica (2164 m) was blown off because of accidental weapon depot explosion. A lot of remains from the war are scattered around.
