Kovačić
Kovačić, alternatively spelled Kovacic in English or Kovacsics in Hungarian, is a common surname in Croatia and far less common in Serbia. It is also very common in Slovenia where it is usually spelled Kovačič. Etymologically it is a patronymic derivative of the surname Kovač, which is a cognate of the English surname Smith, and as such is closely related to the similar surname Kovačević. Thus, they could both be considered equivalents to the English form "Smithson".[citation needed]
In Croatia the form "Kovačić" is more common than Kovač, whereas in Slovenia it is the other way around. There are around 12,000 people with this surname in Croatia, making it the 7th most common in the country.[1] In Slovenia "Kovačič" is the 4th most common surname and there are some 5,600 people with the surname plus some 300 with the form Kovačić (mostly Croats of Slovenia).[citation needed]
