Kotipizza
Kotipizza Oyj is the largest pizza restaurant chain in the Nordic countries. Its head office is in the Vaskiluodon Satamaterminaali in Vaasa, Finland.[1]
Kotipizza was founded in 1987 by Rabbe Grönblom. In summer 2009, the Kotipizza chain included over 250 restaurants in over 130 municipalities. Some Kotipizza restaurants are located in conjunction with car service stations. The most northern Kotipizza restaurant in Finland is located in Karigasniemi in the municipality of Utsjoki. The overall revenue of the Kotipizza restaurant chain in 2008 was 64.9 million euro. Over 95% of the Kotipizza restaurants in Finland are operated by franchising. In addition to Finland, Kotipizza restaurants are found in Saint Petersburg, Estonia and in China in Suzhou, near Shanghai.[2][3] Kotipizza has been chosen as the best franchising chain of the year in 1992 and 2009.[4] Kotipizza's motto is "Pizza, Love & Understanding". Some restaurants offer delivery and accept orders by phone or via the internet.
Pizza Berlusconi
Pizza Berlusconi is Kotipizza's name for its smoked reindeer pizza. With Pizza Berlusconi, Kotipizza won the America's Plate International pizza contest in New York in March 2008, beating the Italians, who got second place, and the Australians at third.[5]
Kotipizza named its smoked reindeer pizza "Pizza Berlusconi" in its advertising campaign and menu in early summer 2008 after Prime Minister of Italy Silvio Berlusconi. Kotipizza did this to mock Berlusconi's statements from 2005 that he had to "endure" Finnish cuisine,[6] when he joked disparagingly about Finns eating "marinated reindeer." Although marinated reindeer is a common dish in Lapland and Alaska, in Finland the meat is traditionally stewed or dried.[7]
