Koratla (also known as Korutla) is a town and a municipality in the Karimnagar district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.^[1]

Geography

Koratla is located at 18°49′N 78°43′E / 18.82°N 78.72°E / 18.82; 78.72,^[2] and has an average elevation of 286 metres (938 ft).

Demographics

As of the 2001 Indian census,^[3] Koratla had a population of 54,121, 50% male and 50% female. Koratla had an average literacy rate of 60%, approximately equal to the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 51%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

History

It is believed that Korutla got its name during Nizam’s era and was previously known as Koravattu.

Economy

Textile trading, home-based Beedi industry, and money from Indians working in the Persian Gulf area are the main sources of income.

Temples

The people are religious. Korutla has many temples, including Sai Baba Temple, Ashta lakshmi, Durga Temple, Ayyappa Temple, Nageswara Temple, Ramalayam and Venkateswara Temple. Durga Navaratri, Vinayaka Navaratri, Deepavali, Sri Rama Navami, Sankranti are local festivals.

Education

The Government of Andhra Pradesh established a Veterinary College in 2008, which opened for the 2008-2009 academic year, taking 19 students into the first year Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry course.

Siphon

One of the largest siphons in Asia is located 5 km from Koratla near Nagulpeta village. Water from the Sriram Sagar Reservoir runs perpendicularly under Koratla. Built in 1953-1973, it was dedicated to and named after its planner, P. S. Ramakrishna Raju.

Banyan tree

One of the largest Banyan trees in Asia is located near Koratla in "Paidimadugu", beside a natural canal 7  km from Koratla. The tree has expanded across 7 acres and is over two hundred years old.
