Kodiak College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kodiak College is a public, two-year satellite campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage, with a student body of approximately 1,000. The campus is also home to the Carolyn Floyd Library.[1]

About

In 1968, Kodiak College opened its doors and began operations as a community college. The college didn't have a large budget and carried out its classes at the local high school facilities on the island of Kodiak. There were just 8 courses available with a total of 95 students enrolled in the college's first year; the director herself--Carolyn Floyd--taught the courses personally. In 1987, Kodiak College changed its previous designation as a community college to be absorbed by and be an extension to the University of Alaska Anchorage. In 1972, Kodiak had completed its first building that was dedicated to classrooms allowing for the college's first departure from the High School campus onto its own.

The campus now accumulates an area of 50 acres that's roughly two miles away from the city of Kodiak. The college as of the winter semester in 2014 has 914 students enrolled and offers approximately one hundred courses each semester. The college employs approximately 50 faculty members--give or take--every semester. Kodiak College's only bachelor degree it offers is a degree in education and from there multiple associate degrees ensue.[2]
