Kkusum ... Ek Aam Ladki Ki Kahani is a daily Indian television drama that was telecast on Sony Entertainment Television from May 2001 to November 2005. It was produced by Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms. The lead actress Nausheen Sardar Ali was replaced by Mansi Joshi Roy and then Shilpa Saklani.

Plot

Kkusum Deshmukh is a middle-class young woman who upholds family values and duties. She receives a proposal to marry Abhay Kapoor, the scion of a rich business family. They get married; but Kkusum does not know of Abhay's pre-marital flings. Also, Kkusum has been chosen by Abhay's family because she has an auspicious effect (called akhanda saubhagyavati yog-- meaning that she can never be widowed) in her horoscope. The Kapoors hope it will help to nullify an effect in his horoscope, which is unlucky for him and can lead to his death. Kkusum soon realizes that Abhay is not interested in her.

In addition, Kkusum later finds out that Abhay has cheated on her with a woman named Esha. This leads to a divorce between KKusum and Abhay. Then, Kkusum marries Siddarth. Abhay turns negative and returns into Kkusum's life to get her back. Gradually, Abhay's attitude begins to change and he no longer wants to break up Siddarth and Kkusum's marriage. Unfortunately, Siddarth dies in a tragic car accident, and, some time later, Kkusum once again marries Abhay.

Kkusum loses her unborn child owing to a miscarriage, and is told that she can not conceive in future. Desperate to give the Kapoor family an heir, she hires a woman named Mahi to be the surrogate mother of her baby. Owing to various misunderstandings, Kkusum is forced to leave the Kapoor house, and is shocked when she realises that she is pregnant. She dedicates the next eighteen years to bring up her daughter Kumud and inculcate in her the idealistic values she's held close to her heart.

Meanwhile, Kkusum's husband Abhay brings up his daughter Kali (born by surrogacy) with Mahi's help. Amidst all the doting over and pampering, Kali grows up to be a spoiled brat. Kali forces Abhay to get married to her biological mother Mahi. Destiny once again brings Kkusum and Abhay face to face, but it's too late. Kali and Kumud go through their youth abhorring each other, and fall in love with Garv and Kshitij respectively. Their fates cross paths when Kumud ends up marrying Garv instead of Kshitij. Kkusum watches helplessly as Kali tries to woo Garv back and Kumud tries to save her married life.

The two half-sisters come to loggerheads again and, this time, Kkusum decides to take charge of the situation. Amidst many ups and downs, Kkusum sees Mahi die and then come back to life. During this time, she is on the run form the police. She is hurt badly and needs plastic surgery to correct her face (thus bringing in a new actress to play her role).

Abhay becomes ill and his mental age is reduced to 5. Seeking a friend's help, Kkusum takes Abhay to Malaysia to help him recover. There, she gets trapped in some problems, but manages to resolve them. However, when Abhay is better, and decides to return to India with Kkusum, another problem arises. He boards the plane to India, but Kkusum is caught with drugs (planted by someone else) in her bag. She is detained in Malaysia and sent to prison for 5 years.

Meanwhile, Abhay is furious with Kkusum, as he mistakenly thinks she has run off with another man after an affair. In anger, he announces that Kkusum is dead to him. Driving extremely fast in a rage, Abhay has a road crash and dies.

When Kkusum returns to India five years later, most of her family have disowned her, but her mother still believes in her. Finally, the mother and daughter succeed in convincing the Kapoor family about the truth. Kkusum is diagnosed with a heart condition and as a result is taken to hospital many times. She gets her daughter Kumud re-married and then, that night, she dies in her sleep. Kumud has a daughter and names her Kkusum, who is shown after a five-year leap. And that's how the show ends.
