Kizad or the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Arabic: مدينة خليفة الصناعية) was unveiled in November 2010 [1] by Abu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) in Abu Dhabi and officially opened in September 2012.[2] When completed, the 418-square-kilometre (161 sq mi) Kizad site will become the world's largest industrial free-trade and non-free trade zone, and will be a key driver in Abu Dhabi's efforts to achieve economic diversification. Under the plans drawn up by the Abu Dhabi government, it was decided to allow the multi-billion dollar industrial park and ports operation to become the emirate's first industrial free zone offering 100 per cent foreign ownership.[3] By 2030, Kizad is expected to contribute up to 15% of the emirate's non-oil GDP.[4]

In keeping with Abu Dhabi’s 2030 plans for economic diversification, Kizad is located on a 418-square-kilometre (161 sq mi) greenfield site in Taweelah as a prominent gateway to capture regional industrial development. The site sits on two plots, which together make up two-thirds the area of Singapore. Kizad benefits from adjacency to the state-of-the-art Khalifa Port, being located almost equidistant between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as from extended frontage along the E11 Highway connecting the two cities. An additional arterial roadway is planned, linking Kizad to Al Ain, the UAE’s largest inland city.

Kizad's primary objective is to attract foreign investments with will generate job opportunities for skilled Emiratis and expatriates alike. According to the Kizad official website: "The economic benefits are obvious – by 2030, Kizad will be expected to contribute around 15% of Abu Dhabi’s non-oil GDP. It will be a powerful magnet for foreign direct investment, with global business locating large-scale primary and downstream manufacturing facilities in the Industrial Zone. It is anticipated that between 60% and 80% of the goods manufactured within Kizad will be exported, adding further value to the nation’s economy."[5]

Kizad’s strategic location linking east and the west, and its world-class, intermodal infrastructure linking sea, air, roads and rail, gives investors easy and efficient access to over 4.5 billion consumers within four time zones.[6]

Vertically integrated clusters offer supply-chain efficiencies, while competitive lease prices, a tax-free setting and some of the lowest utility costs in the world provide businesses with unparalleled, long-term competitive commercial advantages.[7]

Kizad’s anchor investor, Emirates Aluminium (EMAL), which aims to be one of the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelters, began operations in 2009. It currently produces 800,000 tons of aluminium at Kizad and with increasing demand for aluminium, the local market will reach 1.3 million tons with the inauguration of its phase two very soon.[8]

New logistics and heavy industry manufacturing investors are also expected to begin operations from Kizad in 2013.[9]

According to media reports, Kizad could lead to the creation of more than 150,000 jobs due to a deal signed with over 50 local and international companies. By March 2013, Kizad had successfully leased in excess of 60 percent of Area A, which comprises 51 square kilometres (20 sq mi). In the next phase, an additional 347 square kilometres (134 sq mi) of commercial real estate will be leased in Area B.[10]
