King's Mill Hospital (or King's Mill Centre) is a hospital situated adjacent to the main A38 road in a former large open space on the peripheral boundaries between the towns of Sutton-in-Ashfield and Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, UK.

The majority of the buildings are inside Ashfield District Council (town planning) area with some peripheral buildings falling under Mansfield District Council planning controls.[1][2]

The Hospital serves the towns and many villages in the Mansfield Urban Area, parts of the adjacent Nottingham Urban Area, and also parts of the neighbouring county of Derbyshire. The ambulance station opened in 1981 is close-by,[3] separated from the hospital complex by Morrisons supermarket car park, which shares an approach-road with the hospital.

The next nearest hospital is Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where patients may be sent in the event that King's Mill cannot provide sufficient facilities.

The hospital contains a full Accident & Emergency Department, as well as a helipad situated in the nature reserve to the rear of the hospital, where the air ambulance can land.

King's Mill Hospital is the primary site of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Providing healthcare services to around 300,000 people, it is situated in Sutton-in-Ashfield and serves Mansfield, Ashfield and the surrounding Areas.

King's Mill Centre joined with Newark General Hospital and Ashfield and Mansfield District Community Hospitals in 2001 to form Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust, which in February 2007 became Sherwood Forest NHS Foundation Trust following its successful application to Monitor, the governing body.

Rebuild

Sherwood Forest Hospitals is currently undertaking a £320 million Modernisation of Acute Services which has seen a large reconstruction of the existing site. The first major new building, the Diagnostic Treatment Centre, opened in April 2008. As of April 2010, two of the three towers are occupied.

Maternity Services, including Neonatal and the Sherwood Birthing Unit, will be moving out of their accommodation in the Dukeries Centre to the Women's & Children's Services in January 2011.

History

King's Mill was opened as a military hospital in 1942, as the 30th General Hospital of California - the first American wartime hospital in Britain. The hospital housed 400 injured American personnel as well as German prisoners of war.

The Mansfield Secondary Technical School opened in 1945 housed in Nissen huts left by the U.S. Army Hospital. It was later officially opened (22 June 1948) by Sir Hubert Stanley Houldsworth, Chairman of the East Midlands Division of the National Coal Board.[4] It later moved to new premises, becoming known as Sherwood Hall Secondary School.[5]

Other areas of the site were used to create King's Mill Hospital. It was officially opened 17 September 1951 by Mr. Hilary Adair Marquand, the Minister of Health.[6]

On 14 January 1975, the Dukeries Maternity Centre was opened by the Duchess of Devonshire. This was separate from the rest of the hospital. Maternity Services moved to the third tower of the new main hospital complex, the Women and Children's Centre, and the original building was demolished and recycled for hardcore by May 2013.

Radio Station

King's Mill Hospital also boasts its own Radio Station, which broadcasts around the hospital 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Millside Radio has been established for over 20 years at King's Mill.
