Kim Jonghyun (Hangul: ; Hanja: ; born April 8, 1990) is a South Korean idol, singer, dancer, lyricist, composer, promotional model, and radio host. He is a member of South Korean boy group Shinee, as the main vocalist and also member of project ballad group SM The Ballad, both under SM Entertainment.

Career

Pre-debut

Jonghyun has been active in music since he was in junior high school. He was in a band and participated in many festivals in his area. In his band, he was not a vocalist but a bassist. The band's name was "ZION" and during one of its shows, he was scouted by SM.

Before his debut with SHINee, he sang a duet with Zhang Liyin in the song “Wrongly Given Love” for her Chinese album.

Shinee

Jonghyun was discovered at the 2005 S.M. Casting System. In 2008, he was chosen as a member of the group Shinee, the 5-member boy group debuted on May 25, 2008 on SBS's Inkigayo.[2]

SM The Ballad

In November 2010, it was revealed by SM Entertainment that Jonghyun, along with TRAX’s Jay, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, and rookie singer, Jino, had formed a project group, SM The Ballad, under their label. The group focuses more on ballad rather than pop and R&B themes.[3] The group released their debut album, Miss You, on November 29, 2010. They debuted on November 28, 2010 on SBS's Inkigayo with their lead single, "Miss You." They also promoted another single from the album, "Hot Times."

In February 4, 2014, SM Entertainment revealed that SM The Ballad will make a comeback with new members, Jonghyun being the only one from the original formation.[4] It was later revealed that he would be singing, together with Girls' Generation's Taeyeon, the title track of the new album, Breath.[5]

Solo

In October 2010, Jonghyun was one of twenty idols from various South Korean groups that recorded the song, "Let's Go," for the purpose of increasing public participation in the 2010 G-20 Seoul summit. He provided vocals along with label-mates Sungmin, Seohyun and Luna.[6]

Composing and Lyric Writing

In the 4th mini album Sherlock, Jonghyun had written the two songs 'Honesty' and 'Alarm Clock'. The song 'Honesty' is written to give thanks to their fans who have stayed by their side with unchanging love until now. The other song, 'Alarm Clock' which is also co-written with fellow member Minho, is about wishing to wake up from a nightmare of past break-up.[7] He also wrote for multiple SHINee songs including 'Selene 6.23' (album "The Misconceptions of Us") and 'Symptoms' (album "Everybody"). Jonghyun fully composed the collaboration track with IU, 'Gloomy Clock' in the IU's 3rd album "Modern Times".[8] He also fully composed, wrote and lead the vocal direction for Son Dam Bi's digital single, "Red Candle".[9] Not only did Jonghyun compose and write the song, he also took part in the vocal directing. The lyrics relate the characteristics of a candle to someone in love, who feels excited and nervous at the same time.[10]

Television shows

On 6 November 2009, label mate Yesung of Super Junior made a surprise appearance on KBS' Music Bank with Shinee in place of Jonghyun, who was recovering from influenza, in a performance of "Ring Ding Dong".[11] Jonghyun was also a cast member in KBS's Immortal Song 2 for two episodes with fellow label-mate Yesung. On January 14 2014, it was announced that he would be a cast member of the pilot variety show Music Show.[12]

Personal life

Jonghyun did not attend kindergarten. Jonghyun sustained ligament injuries to his left ankle after he was mobbed by excited fans following Shinee's performance at the Korea-Indonesia Sharing Friendship Concert on October 12, 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Immediately upon arriving back home in Seoul, Jonghyun went to the hospital where he received a minor cast to protect his ankle. However, SM Entertainment stated that his injury was not serious and that he and the rest of Shinee would continue to promote their upcoming single "Hello" without problems. Also during their first Japan concert at Tokyo, Jonghyun was taken out of some of Shinee's song that had very hard dance moves, just for Jonghyun's ankle.[13]

On November 15, 2010 following Jonghyun's absence from an event in which Shinee performed, honoring the 20th Anniversary of SBS, SM Entertainment revealed that Jonghyun had been suffering constant pains in his ankle due to his ligament injuries the previous month. Because of this SM Entertainment announced that they would "minimize intense choreography [for Jonghyun] in performances".[14] As a result, Jonghyun was unable to dance alongside his fellow group members for several months.[15]

On October 20, 2010, Jonghyun and actress Shin Se-kyung were spotted dating by a local news outlet and their agencies confirmed the relationship on October 26.[16][17][18] After nine months of dating, Shin and Jonghyun broke up in June 2011, citing their busy schedules.[19][20]

Jonghyun received surgery to his left ankle at a hospital in Seoul on January 17, 2011 to repair the damage done in October 2010. His ankle injury was previously thought to be minor but after further examination, it was deemed to require surgery. Due to being in recovery, Jonghyun was unable to perform alongside his fellow Shinee group members at the 20th Seoul Music Awards on January 20, 2011. The news of his surgery was delayed in being reported to the media.[21]

April 2013 car accident

On April 1, 2013, Jonghyun got into a car accident, S.M. Entertainment's official statement regarding the accident stated that "Jonghyun ran into the guard rails on Dongho Bridge earlier today while driving his own car to return to the dormitory after visiting his home." He did not suffer major injuries and had been receiving treatment for his nose fracture at the emergency room at a Gangnam hospital.[22][23]
