Kimberly Joy Couture (née Borrego, born December 18, 1975)[1] is a professional mixed martial artist. She has fought for and was formerly signed to the Strikeforce promotion. She's the ex-wife of UFC Hall of Fame inductee Randy Couture.

Early life

Couture grew up on a ranch with her brother. She has played basketball, volleyball and track throughout her life.[1][4]

Mixed martial arts career

Before starting her MMA career, Couture worked as a sheriff's deputy for two years in Colorado and four years as a casino executive in Las Vegas.[4] She got involved with MMA upon looking for a workout routine but did not consider becoming a MMA fighter until Gina Carano joined the Xtreme Couture gym.[5]

Couture made her MMA debut against Kim Rose at Banner Promotions: Night of Combat on June 20, 2008.[6] She suffered a broken jaw in the first round of the fight but continued fighting and was defeated by Unanimous Decision.[7] She was also negotiating a contract with the American Fight League at this time.[6]

Couture faced Lina Kvokov in her second MMA fight at Strikeforce: Destruction in San Jose, California on November 21, 2008.[8] She won the fight by TKO in the first round.[9]

She was originally scheduled to face Miesha Tate at Strikeforce Challengers: Evangelista vs. Aina on May 15, 2009, but withdrew from the fight for undisclosed reasons.[10]

Couture faced Kerry Vera on November 20, 2009 at Strikeforce Challengers: Woodley vs. Bears in Kansas City, Kansas.[11] She lost the fight by TKO in the first round.[12]

Couture faced Rosa Vizcarra at Xtreme Fighters Mexico on March 27, 2010. She won the fight by TKO in the first round.[13]

Couture faced Marianna Kheyfets in the co-main event at XFC 11: The Next Generation on July 9, 2010.[14] She lost the fight by submission due to a triangle choke in the first round.[15]

Couture faced Felicia Wells at AAMMA 5 - Battle Against Breast Cancer on October 2, 2010. She won the fight via reverse arm triangle choke in the second round.[16]

Couture faced 2007 Golden Gloves Boxing Champion Munah Holland at Ring of Combat 32 on October 23, 2010.[17] She was defeated via unanimous decision.[18]

Couture faced Sheila Bird at AX Combat 1 on July 8 at the Calgary Telus Convention Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where she lost by technical submission after what some considered a late stoppage. After the fight hit the mat in the opening round, Bird locked a leg-scissors choke on Couture. The Calgary Combative Sports Commission investigated the stoppage and ruled in favor of the referee. [19]

Personal life

Kim was married to former three-time UFC Heavyweight Champion and two-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture.[20]Kim and Randy have filed for divorce, with Randy continuing to coach and support Kim's MMA career.[20] She has a son named Oakley from a previous marriage.[21] She also has a daughter named Aspen from a previous relationship.[3]
