Kilvelur is a panchayat town in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is 12 km east of Tiruvarur, 12 km west of Nagapattinam and 6 km west of Sikkal a famous Muruga shrine. It is famous for its magnificent Akshyalingaswamy temple that was glorified in the immortal song of Muthuswami Dikshitar - Akshaya Linga Vibho in the Ragam Sankarabharanam.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Kilvelur had a population of 7404. Males (3694) constitute 50% of the population and females (3791) 50%. Kilvelur has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 66%. In Kilvelur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. KILVELUR taluk is a taluk of Nagapattinam district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The headquarters of the taluk is the town of Kilvelur. Lok Sabha politics

Kilvelur comes under the Nagapattinam (Lok Sabha constituency) – it has the following six assembly constituencies – Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Thiruthuraipoondi, Vedaranyam, Kilvelur (SC) and Nannilam.[2] The current Member of Parliament from the constituency is A.K.S. Vijayan from the DMK.[3] From 1957, the Nagapattinam parliament seat was held by the Indian National Congress for 4 times during 1957-1961,[4] 1962–67,[5] 1991–96,[6] and 1996–98[7] elections. CPI won the seat for 5 times during 1971–77,[8] 1977–80,[9] 1989–91,[10] 1996–98[7] and 1998[11] elections. DMK won 4 times during 1980–84,[12] 1999–2004,[13] 2004–09[14] and 2011 elections. ADMK won the seat once during 1984–89.[15]
