The recently rebuilt station at night

Kiel Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station in the northern German city of Kiel. It consists of six rail tracks, all of which are electrified, and is a hub for train services to nearby towns such as Plön and Eckernförde.

Overview

The station is across the street from the end of the Kiel Fjord. It is known for its huge number of commuters who travel daily from Kiel to work on the line to Hamburg by the Schleswig-Holstein Regionalbahn. About 24,000 passengers use the station daily, making it the second busiest in Schleswig-Holstein, behind Lübeck Hauptbahnhof in the southeast of the state.[citation needed]

History

The station was opened in 1899, replacing a station built between 1843 and 1846 that was 250 metres further north. It was severely damaged in the Second World War and was rebuilt in the 1950s in a simplified form. In the early 2000s, the station underwent a large renovation of its interior.[2]

Services

Regular services to the station operate on the following lines:
